Key achievements
Environmental education is crucial to achieving the behaviour change required to become a more sustainable and environmentally responsible community. Through education, individuals and organisations can gain the knowledge to develop the skills and values to respond to complex environmental issues. Council has an active role in education as a primary means for equipping the community with the information and skills to enable them to effect environmental change.
Council » Continued to deliver sustainability-themed workshops as well as environmental training and development opportunities for Council staff. Community » Continued to provide sustainability support and learning opportunities for schools and early learning centres through the Green Schools Network. New sessions offered in 2015/16 included Indigenous culture, sustainable cities and green infrastructure. » Delivered the school Leadership Conference in partnership with Cool Australia involving 80 students from five schools within Stonnington. The Conference is designed to empower students to become the sustainability leaders of tomorrow. » Supported a Stonnington primary school to attend the Kids Teaching Kids Conference. This six month project-based program culminated in a two day conference. Kids across Victoria came together to discuss
sustainability topics that are important to their schools and communities. » Sponsored Port Phillip EcoCentre’s annual Sustainability Schools Festival. » Developed and delivered a series of new, engaging and interactive community events, workshops and tours as part of our annual Calendar of Environmental Events . » Installed new interactive signage around the Glen Iris Wetlands to educate the community on biodiversity, wetland processes and stormwater. » Continued to deliver the Sustainability Outreach Program, broadening the scope of community sustainability programs and tailoring initiatives to engage a broader sector of the community including apartment owners and businesses. » Developed a series of case studies to promote businesses who are adopting sustainable practices to communicate and encourage sustainability practices in business.

Council » Continue to provide environmental education opportunities for staff and deliver sustainability-themed workshops. Community » Investigate new school and early learning centre excursions and incursions. » Pilot a schools program which provides schools with tailored support and guidance to help them reduce waste. » Develop a series of educational videos on waste and biodiversity. » Install new interactive signage at Percy Treyvaud Memorial Park and along Gardiners Creek bike path expanding the current Glen Iris Wetlands signage. » Continue to deliver the Sustainability Outreach Program to further engage and involve the Stonnington community in sustainability by broadening the scope of community sustainability programs and tailoring initiatives to engage a broader sector of the community. » Continue to develop and promote case studies to showcase local businesses who are adopting sustainable practices.
