the government, such as signing off on plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. Additionally, the PM represents the Government in debates and is seen often defending policies and attacking the opposition in Prime Minister ’ s Questions (PMQs) on Wednesdays. The PM can be considered the representative of the UK on the global stage. The PM is expected to negotiate and attend conferences with allies and enemies alike and the PM is usually seen in high - scale events to boost their image back in the UK. An entire Military force could also be considered under the control of the PM (although it is technically under the reigning monarch ’ s control , in all practical senses it is under the direct control of the PM. The PM enjoys making decisions on when to have the military intervene and is ultimately in charge of all defence policies. The PM could also use the military to reinforce the government ’ s opinion on certain situations, and the military is often used as an intimidation tactic against hostile foreign nations. The Prime Minister also has the power to call general elections. They must take place at least every five years, but the date can be set by the PM. The PM at the time could strategically time the election to their advantage when approval ratings are high, or could put off calling an election when his/her approval ratings are low. Nevertheless, the time when the General Election is called is crucial, and the timing of the General Election could ultimately decide whether the current PM stays in power or not. The immense power the PM holds over when the General election is called can demonstrate how much influence the PM has over elections and how he/ she can use that power to their own advantage.
In conclusion, the PM ’ s power is extensive, but each aspect of his power is often under scrutiny and there are mechanisms to depose him if his party turns against him. The PM ’ s extensive powers not only make the role of PM one of the most powerful, but also makes the PM ’ s role as one of the most influential and important in the world.
