SUDOKU BREAK Solution on pg. 4

Phyllis’ Favorites Family-Owned House of Lu Serves Marietta for 22 Years When Cindy Lu Tam’s mom, Cindy Lu Senior, said she was going to sell her restaurant in 2010, Cindy knew she had to do something. “That’s when I said, ‘No, don’t sell it. I’m going to move back home and take over the restaurant,’” Cindy recalls. “She was just startled that I was going to do that. I felt that it was needed.” Cindy left her job as a software consultant and worked with her husband, who was an architect, to keep her mother’s passion alive. Because of their drive and determination, House of Lu still stands in the Marietta Square 22 years after it first opened its doors. “I wanted to continue her legacy because she’s been a staple in the Marietta area,” Cindy says. House of Lu has been dedicated to made-from-scratch food since the beginning. To this day, the restaurant continues the tradition Cindy Lu Senior started by never using frozen vegetables, hand-rolling their dumplings and egg rolls in freshly made dough, and crafting dishes with fresh ingredients. In 2012, Cindy and Johnny Tam renovated the exterior of House of Lu. In 2014, the interior went through a complete makeover. The restaurant’s menu expanded to include Vietnamese phŏ, and its bar upgraded to provide alcohol. “People were just stunned; it was just so modern,” Cindy says.

Zucchini SaladWith Toasted Hazelnuts

Inspired by Food &Wine magazine

With raw zucchini, toasted hazelnuts, and a robust Parmigiano-Reggiano, this early summer salad is a delight of different textures and flavors that will make a great side at your next cookout.

In addition to offering quality Chinese and Vietnamese specialties, House of Lu has also become a hub of community interaction. Neighboring the Strand Theatre, Cindy says the restaurant is very supportive of the arts. They proudly feature artwork, antiques, and murals inside the restaurant, and this spring, they added a large mural along the outside of their building.

Ingredients

• • • • • • •

3 small zucchini (3/4 lb.) ● 1/2 tsp lemon zest, grated 3● tbsp fresh lemon juice 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil ● Salt and pepper, to taste

Phyllis Gingrey Collins of PhyllisLaw.com has even relied on the restaurant for a few events she has hosted for legal colleagues, Cindy says. Phyllis estimates she has been a frequent customer of House of Lu for the past 15 years, citing its location, quality food, and new atmosphere as some of her favorite components. “I know her as a customer first; now she’s become a family friend,” Cindy says. Regardless of whatever upgrades, changes, and causes House of Lu takes on, Cindy says they will continue to provide the Marietta area with a fresh, sit-down Asian food dining experience. “My mom loves food and cooking. She believes in doing everything from scratch. Pretty much everything we do is from scratch,” Cindy says. “This is not a new term for us.”
