Le conseil municipal du canton de Hawkesbury-Est demandera aux gouvernements provincial et fédéral de prendre une partie de l’argent des taxes qu’ils obtiennent de toute transaction immobilière en Ontario et de la remettre aux municipalités pour les aider à répondre aux besoins locaux en matière d’infrastructure. The federal government also collects GST on all property deals, “a portion of which could be directed to municipalities to address local infrastructure needs.” The resolution asks the provincial govern- ment to consider turning over a portion of its Land Transfer Tax revenue and for the federal government to allocate a share of the GST it receives on property deals to muni- cipalities. East Hawkesbury council argues that doing so would provide municipalities with a regular source of funding aid to help with their infrastructure needs and avoid “creating a new tax burden on residents or homebuyers.” Copies of the resolution will go to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Doug Ford, the provincial ministers for finance and municipal affairs, and to all MPs and MPPs.

East Hawkesbury Township will ask the senior levels of government to give back some of the tax money they collect from municipalities. Township council approved a resolution during their November 12 session to ask the provincial government to return a share of the municipal land tax it collects to help municipalities deal with their infrastructure maintenance needs. The resolution indicated that the money that municipalities themselves get through property taxes, user fees, developent charges and other sources “are insufficient to meet the increasing demands for infrastructure investment”. The provincial government, the resolution noted, collects a Land Transfer Tax on every
