ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER?

encourage your child to take up a hobby? Help them with a summer job and finance management. Or, take an educational trip as a family. From historical landmarks to ecological sites like fish hatcheries or wilderness preserves, summer is an excellent time to go on an adventure. Older kids may already have strong interests that they’d like to spend time on, and those three months of summer can be great for working on larger projects. If your teenager is a budding writer, why not have them spend some real time writing and see what comes out? Musically-minded kids might try writing and recording their own music to share online. Allowing them to have control over their output means they’ll stay interested, and requiring them to spend at least an hour a day on their interest ensures they’ll develop the work ethic that will carry ensure success later in life. Similarly, limiting screen time to an hour or so a day is a good way to encourage kids to get out of the house, or just away from the TVs, computers, and smartphones. Better yet, curate their content. If your kids are real Netflix-lovers, have them analyze three or four series and write a review, comparing and contrasting their strengths and weaknesses. Or, encourage your kids to broaden their video game horizons and write similar reviews. The fact is, there are many ways for kids to engage this summer. Challenge yours to have a fun — and educational — next three months.

Sometime in the next month, the last school bell will ring, signaling the start of summer vacation. For kids, it’s an exciting time of freedom, longer days, and progression into the next grade. For parents, it may seem like spring break was just a few days ago, and wasn’t winter break the week before that? Sure, you love having your kids around, but let’s be honest — it can be tough to keep those young minds occupied (and out of trouble) for three straight months. This struggle is compounded by the “summer slide,” which the Department of Education describes as learning lost “when children do not engage in educational activities during the summer months.” You don’t want your fourth-grader heading into the year knowing less than they did at the end of the third grade. Fortunately, there are many ways to combat the summer slide and keep kids’ idle hands (and minds) occupied this summer. The first step? Encourage reading. Sure, it may be easier to keep kids glued to the TV or gaming station. But the right book can be just as engaging as the latest digital entertainment, and it’s also a good way to keep comprehension and learning skills fresh when school is out. It’s also affordable — libraries are excellent places for getting everybody a book they’ll love, at no cost to you. Libraries are also hubs for diversity, welcoming people of all ages, ethnicities, and abilities. There, kids will encounter people from all walks of life — an education all its own. Summer can also be a great time to teach kids lessons they wouldn’t learn in school. Why not

PUMP-UP PLAYLIST Science Shows Certain Tempos Can Enhance Your Workout

Make the Perfect

which runs at 160 beats per minute. It then slows back down, closing with “Royals” by Lorde. The tempo isn’t just about running — it’s indicative of an entire workout cycle. “Roar” is what Dr. Karageorghis calls stretching music, whereas “Get Lucky” through “Happy” is for cardio, and the latter half has strength-exercise songs like “Get Down” by Groove Armada, before the music starts heading to a close. Dr. Karageorghis also did live test research, where subjects exercised on a treadmill to various songs. He found that certain upbeat tempos and strong beats were able to increase performance. However, the biggest takeaway from the study was this: Simply having music enhanced endurance by 15 percent. It enabled athletes to get more pleasure from their workout. Regardless of what you listen to, crank those tunes and hit the gym! The playlist was published in Medical Daily and can be found on their website under “The Optimal Workout Music Playlist As Designed By Scientists.”

Could you make the ultimate workout playlist? Just about everyone with a Spotify or Apple Music membership has tried. Some borrow from curated playlists made by the site’s experts, while others rely on music that personally gets them going. For you, that could be anything from extreme dubstep to Abba’s “Dancing Queen.” We’re not here to judge. Two years ago, a sports medicine scientist took a crack at crafting the perfect music playlist for optimal athletic performance. Dr. Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London analyzed nearly 7 million playlists to determine what the perfect pump-up mix would look like. He found that your personal taste plays a part, but science plays a bigger role. Here’s how: Music induces alpha brain activity, which helps athletes get “in the zone” and become hyperfocused. To reach that state, you need to experience warm up, peak, and cool down periods. Dr. Karageorghis’ perfect playlist starts with medium-tempo songs with strong beats, like Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” It then ramps up to Pitbull’s “Timber” and peaks with Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,”

May’s Best Deals What to Buy to Save the Most

April showers bring May deals! This month, and thanks in part to Memorial Day sales, you’ll be able to save big at a number of different retailers. But scattered among all of these sales, you’ll be able to find a few hidden gems that will save you hundreds, if not more. Take a look: MATTRESSES Mattress stores always seem to be having sales. If you’ve ever driven past a mattress store (or 12) on your way to work or while running errands, you’ve probably noticed the trend. But despite these endless sales, May is one of the best months to buy a mattress, and it all comes down to one day: Memorial Day. You may still need to shop around to find the perfect mattress for your needs, but with every mattress store running sales, that affordably priced pillow top won’t be hard to find. REFRIGERATORS Like mattresses, many kitchen appliances go on sale during Memorial Day weekend. But when it comes to May deals, not all appliances are created equal. Fridge manufacturers start rolling out new models in June, which means retailers need to get

rid of last year’s stock. If you need to upgrade other major appliances in your home (dishwasher, stove, oven, etc.), you’ll want to hold off until late summer/ early fall, but be sure to pick up your refrigerator now. OFFICE FURNITURE Right around the end of tax season in April, office furniture sellers try to get the attention of small businesses and home businesses. Like most retailers around this time, they want a piece of your tax return. Instead of jumping on Tax Day sales, wait a month and you’ll be greeted by steep end-of-season discounts. Plus, with school ending in May and June, demand for office furniture is exceptionally low, giving you the chance to upgrade your office for less. WHAT NOT TO BUY There are two big categories where you aren’t going to find any deals: laptops and Mother’s Day gifts. You’ll end up paying close to full price for these items. And, well, when it comes to Mother’s Day, if you wanted to save on a gift for your mom, you shouldn’t have waited until the last minute.
