Best of Cruise - July 2022

There is a legend of an island east of Java. It was a beautiful island, but its fertile plains and palm-fringed shores rocked and were unsteady. The Gods conferred. They decided the answer lay in placing a mountain upon the island to balance, calm and soothe it. And so they did. The mountain was called Great Mountain - Gunung Agung - and the island was Bali.

This tropical tableau is alive with waterfalls and monkeys, lush green rice terraces, brooding mountains and colourful temples mirrored in turquoise lakes. The Balinese have a vibrant culture whose beliefs, rites and festivals have long fascinated visitors captivated by vivid and multi-sensory Hindu ceremonies, accompanied by melodic chanting and tinkling gamelan. Bali is more than a place; it’s a mood, an aspiration, a tropical state of mind. Once a sleepy fishing village, Kuta gained fame as a great spot for surfing during the 1970s. It’s become Bali’s most popular destination along with neighbouring Seminyak, but the cognoscenti head to Jimbaran, famed for its sunsets and seafood; or sublime Nusa Dua with its crystal clear waters. Perched among the terraced rice fields that climb up the foothills of Bali’s central mountains, Ubud is considered the island’s cultural heart and boasts galleries selling woodcarving, silverware, textiles, paintings and sculpture.
