On The Cover Throughout 2024 the NSRA has noticed an uptick in younger participants and spectators cruising the shows and as they gawk at automobiles built before they were born, like this luxurious ’62 Pontiac Grand Prix, it brings back exciting memories of when we used to get on our hands and knees to inspect undercarriages. We were eager and excited just like the kids showing up at NSRA events today.

Kindred Spirits

A s I contemplate this month’s Curbside, time is not on my side. We final approve this issue’s files with the printer tomorrow and the next day my wife and I are hitting the road to attend the 57th Annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SEMA Show experience, much like the NSRA Street Rod Nationals, have been on my calen- dar of must-attend events throughout my career and I’ve been fortunate to have attended most of these shows for nearly 50 years. Both shows offer similar stimuli for your next build, purchase or friend, and I always seem to return home rejuvenated by the expe- riences. Each year the SEMA Show also marks the public release of next year’s NSRA Event Schedule at our National Street Rod Association display on the main floor of the show. You can also find the upcoming 2025 schedule on page 90 of this issue or at www.nsra-usa.com. Consisting of eight Divisional Events and the 56th Street Rod Nationals, there were no new events added for 2025 and seeing both new 2024 two-day shows, Mobile Bay and Quad Cities, hosting their 2nd Annual events in 2025 is exciting. With the schedule completed an Event Director for each event is designated and the symphony begins. For over 50 years NSRA members have chosen to vol- unteer their efforts and skills to make the word ‘Association’ in National Street Rod Association mean something. The sheer volume of volunteers prove the kindred spirit amongst all of us that love restoring or modifying 30-year-and-older automobiles exists within the ranks of our membership. From street rodders helping each other out in the very early ‘70s to what have become world-class services, volunteers have driven the progress. The three major areas of volunteerism within the NSRA include members of the free Safety Inspection Program, the Michigan Hot Rod Association Rod Repair Shop and the State Directors in the Street Rod Division that organize and promote NSRA nation- wide. Each has played an important role over the past half Century as have an untold number of Host Clubs, individuals and facilities staff. Since 1972 the MHRA Rod Repair Shop has logged over 400,000 miles traveling to events helping rodders at no cost with repairs to get them back on the road. Testimonials to their services would fill a book and seeing their volunteerism at work is simply amazing. Early on the NSRA divided the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, into seven Divisions including the Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, West, Northwest and Southwest. In

the Street Rod Division the seven Division Directors report to the National Field Director, currently Charlie Bryson. These Directors appoint State Directors for all 50 States and the number of volunteers needs to be doubled due to multiple positions in larger states and Advisor positions in some cases. The State Directors stay in touch with clubs in their area and hold NSRA Appreciation Days (usually in conjunction with Safety Inspections) at local shops or club events. These vol- unteers also travel to non-NSRA events with member- ship displays and volunteer at NSRA events wherever needed. Winter doesn’t stop these guys and gals because when the indoor car shows come around they set up NSRA displays and promote membership or answer questions from show goers. Many NSRA volunteers include husbands and wives enjoying the rodding lifestyle together, working to ensure smooth- running events and spreading the joy of “Fun With Cars.” On the Safety side of things, Roger Barnhill is the current National Safety Director and was recently dis- cussing the origins of the NSRA Safety Inspection Program with 54-year member Tom Vollbrecht Sr. Tom is one of the original Minnesota Safety Team members and he remembered inspections being performed at Detroit in 1972 and in 1973 Safety Inspections were actually listed as an activity at the Nationals. In 1976 Street Rodder magazine reported the NSRA’s rollout of the Safety Program nationwide within the seven Division structure and each would be appointed a Chief Inspector for their Division. They also reported that three inspectors would perform inspections, each focused on certain areas of the car. One checked for approved safety glass, wipers, lights, horn and neu- tral safety switch. The second inspector checked brakes, tires, shocks, steering and emergency brake. The third inspector focused on chassis fasteners including rod ends and bushings, fuel system, throttle linkage and exhaust. Today there are hundreds of Safety Team members across the country with teams in every state doing their best to spot trouble before it begins. In addition to the ‘structured’ ways of volunteering within the NSRA there were 39 Volunteer Clubs that stepped up to help produce this year’s Street Rod Nationals alone. Host Clubs across the nation volun- teer at Divisional events as well and every now and then you run across an individual volunteer that proves the kindred spirit is alive and well in our rod- ding world. Tree of Life Cruisers Staff,

Much Appreciated NSRA Staff,

This year on the first day of the 44th Street Rod Nationals North rod- ders were invited to cruise a short mile from the Expo center to the Tree of Life Christian School for a mini car show for underprivileged kids at the

We just wanted to send a quick note of appreciation for receiving an NSRA “Merit Award” at the Natchitoches Car Show recently. Unfortunately we had to leave early before the awards presentation, but the pre-

school for kindergarten through 8th grade. This year the principals behind this cruise started a hot rod club called “Tree of Life Cruisers - Kalamazoo.” Every hot rodder who brought a car to the show was automatically made a Charter Member of this exclusive cause-related club and O’Brien Truckers made these kool plaques for the cause. Consider blessing these kiddos by making the short trip to the school next year. Short trip…big reward! Chuck Caswell thecaswellagency@gmail.com. Chuck, No stranger to volunteer work, your efforts over the years have touched others in many ways.—ED

senter, NSRA Louisiana State Representative Larry Teal, mailed the award plaque to us. We’d like to thank both Larry and the NSRA for going out of their way to make sure we received this great piece of memorabilia. Jackie & Patsy Elee Collinston, Louisiana Jackie & Patsy, As you’ll see elsewhere in this month’s issue, volunteers play a huge role in making NSRA-style events so successful and we are very thankful for their continued support. — ED

Dueling Viewpoints Hi Tom,

ran a full-race flatty (286ci, Isky cam, floor-shifted ‘39 box with ‘53 gears, Columbia 2-speed rear, ‘40 Merc juice brakes, big and littles with Olds spinner caps, origi- nal black paint and white pinstripes). Modern rodders like the nostalgia rides we made in our heyday. dannancy@juno.com Via e-mail

I couldn’t agree more with your question in last month’s “Curbside” about having two-day NSRA events and holding the awards presentation on Saturday evening rather than Sunday afternoon. I’m a long-time attendee at both the East and Northeast Street Rod Nationals however I usually don’t stay for awards at three-day shows. I need to be on the road early on Sunday morning not only to make it a less tiresome ride, but also at 80 years old I like to be off the road and home before dark. I’m hoping this change will be implemented at more shows. W. Pete Smythe Via e-mail Tom, You missed mentioning one of our highlights while attending NSRA events in your recent “Curbside.” At two-day car shows that end on Saturday evening with the awards presentation there are no Sunday morning non-denominational Church Services! This is a must for us old guys to thank our Maker for the rodding fellowship we so enjoy. I’ve enjoyed StreetScene for many years and have no interest in the digital version you mentioned as well. I read many magazines to get ideas for my next build and even have a March 1959 Hot Rod magazine that was printed before you were born. My ‘37 Ford Tudor

Guys, The informal poll of two- or three-day car shows is neck and neck! Sounds like

recent politics.—ED Pointing It Out Dear Editor,

I wait in anticipation each month for my favorite magazine to arrive in the mail- box. Alas, as a favorite hangout for local street rod- ders I regret to tell you StreetScene continually mis- spells the name of our favorite restaurant here in Louisville. As you can see in the photo of my ‘33 Chevy the correct spelling is “ Mike Linnigs.” Tom Pendley Via e-mail Tom, We appreciate your feedback and correction to our error, and let the crew at Mike Linnigs know we appreciate their support to local rodders.—ED

Take A Kid To A Car Show

SEMA began promoting the slogan “Take A Kid To A Car Show” years ago and it may have even more relevance today than yesteryear. Exposure to any pursuit is key to becoming involved and when the Wrightington family reached out to us with their story we knew we had to share this perfect example of successful influence. The three Wrightington brothers, Everett, David and Ronald have been into cars since they were little kids. Their father, Everett Wrightington, Sr., got them into hot rodding early between the ages of 6-11 years old. The four of them would go to the local salvage yard and while dad would be getting parts for his ‘49 Mercury or mom’s old Plymouth, the three Wrightington brothers would be off looking around for cool horn buttons, hubcaps, car emblems and other treasures to take home with them.

All three Wrightington brothers are US Army Veterans and live in Massachusetts. (L-R) Everett Wrightington, 80 years old from Rochester served in Germany, Ronald Wrightington, 75 years old from Lakeville served in Vietnam, and David Wrightington, 78 years old from Rochester served in Korea.

Massachusetts (oldest NASCAR sponsored track). They also trav- eled to Sanford, Maine, where Ohio George Montgomery and other top racers of the time were tearing up the asphalt. At the

took place back when Hot Rod, Car Craft and Rod & Custom were small-format magazines. All three brothers attended four years of Auto Vocational School and then in the late ‘60s the Wrightington brothers were draft- ed into military service in the Army. They were very proud to serve their country. When they returned from the military service each of them began building their own hot rods. Almost a lifetime has gone by and the brothers are still enjoying their custom-built hot rods by going to shows together and the boys say: “You brought us up right—Thanks Dad.”

indoor shows they saw many famous cars built by Gene Winfield, Alexander Brothers, George Barris, Bill Cushenbery and Ed Roth. As pre-teens Dave and Ron stood 3-feet away from Ed Roth while he airbrushed a sweat- shirt for them for $5. Eventually the brothers began entering every model car contest they could and the detail they put into building their model cars earned them many trophies. Total Cost Involved Engineering’s 50th

T otal Cost Involved Engineering (TCI), a leading manufacturer of high-performance suspensions and chassis, has been celebrating their 50th Anniversary throughout 2024. Ed Moss, owner and president of this family-based business, founded TCI in 1974. From humble beginnings in a garage with three employees and as the company’s head engi- neer, Ed built a successful business with the promise of satisfying the customer, from his first collaboration with the customer to final delivery and beyond.

dedicated employees, all with a joint vision of building the per- fect ride every time. Ed Moss states, “I’m so proud of what we’ve built over the last five decades. We set the bar high at every stage of product develop- ment—design, engineering, manufac-

turing, delivery, customer service and tech support. From the start, we partnered with our customers to understand what they want, how the vehicle is going to be used, their vision, and then engineered the best chassis or suspension part possible, whether it’s for show or go. We’re one of the few companies with employees that build and race vehicles on the week- end under the most extreme horsepower and track layouts. We are testing our products in Autocross and delivering wins weekend after weekend. Mostly, we’re all very grateful for being able to do what we love and share our passion with our customers.”

The original garage location of Total Cost Involved.

The company’s first product was a newly designed and engineered Model A chassis that improved the car’s safety and drivability. Spurred by the success of this first product, TCI branched into additional products for street rods before launching a suspension and chassis product line for classic trucks and muscle cars, earning in the process a pres- tigious SEMA award for excellence in manufacturing. Today TCI operates from a 32,000 sq. ft. state-of- the-art facility in Ontario, California, shipping parts and complete chassis globally. They employ over 50

Current employees of TCI who gathered for last year’s toy drive.

The opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of the National Street Rod Association and/or StreetScene Magazine. A History of Ford’s Legendary 4X4 Ford Bronco By Todd Zuercher

GI s returning after World War II created an entirely new auto- motive market niche when they bought surplus Jeeps and began exploring the rugged backcountry of the American West. This bur- geoning market segment, which eventually became known as sport utility vehicles (SUVs), numbered about 40,000 units per year with offerings from Jeep, Scout, Toyota and Land Rover. In 1966, Ford entered the fray with its Bronco, offering increased refinement, more power, and an innovative coil-spring front suspension. The Bronco caught on quickly and soon established a reputation as a solid backcountry performer. In Baja, the legendary accomplish- ments of racers such as Parnelli Jones, Rod Hall, and Bill Stroppe further cemented the bobtail’s repu- tation for toughness. Ford moved upstream with the introduction of the larger Bronco for 1978, witnessing a huge increase in sales for the second- generation trucks. The Twin Traction Beam frontend was intro- duced in the third generation, and further refinements including more aerodynamic styling, greater luxury, and more powerful fuel- injected engines came on board in the generations that followed. Through it all, the Bronco retained its reputation as a tough, versatile, and comfortable rig, both on and off the paved road. With the rein- troduction of the Bronco for 2020, Ford is producing a vehicle for a whole new generation of enthusi- asts that looks to bring modern styling and performance to the market while building on the 30-

year heritage of the first five gen- erations of the Bronco so dearly loved by their owners. From the development process and details of the first trucks through the 1996 models, author Todd Zuercher shares technical details, rarely seen photos, and highlights of significant models along with the stories of those people whose lives have been intertwined with the Bronco for many years. This book will have new information for everyone and will be a must-have for long- time enthusiasts and new owners alike! The 8 1/2 x 11-inch, 192- page hardbound book features 90 B&W and 384 color photos. J ohn Downs Jr. loved working with his dad on cars as a kid and one day while on vacation to Niagara Falls a sweet little pre-war coupe pulled in front of the family station wagon, nailed it, and drove off with young John’s hot rod heart. The essence of hot and street rodding hasn’t changed since then; find a little tiny old car, cram an oversized modern engine inside it, put some cool wheels on it, and have your own bit of heaven (or hell). John Downs has had a long string of hot rods like a ’40 Ford, a ’68 Chevelle, and even has a rodding son of his own. This time around he wanted Feature design by Paul Sloup Article & photography by Louie Mayall

something unique and challenging, which somehow led him to a Morris Eight Series E. I’ve seen a stock Morris Eight and ugly isn’t something we call cars, but she isn’t pretty, flowing, sophisticated or anything else good other than dorky times ten. Ultimately, John ended up going over the pond to British Racing Green and had the stocker shipped to his home in Delaware. John had big plans for his ’39 Morris Eight Series E and he knew he needed a great chassis to make everything fit and have a street rod that was road ready. John started by making a bunch of drawings and ultimately turned over the whole project to FatMan Fabrications who built a tube frame for the

Morris. The front suspension is a FatMan Mustang II- styled unit with tubular A-arms, Shockwaves, power rack and pinion steering, and third-gen Camaro front discs. The rear suspension is a Ford 9-inch sitting on another set of Shockwaves, held in place with a tri- angulated four-bar, and the rear discs are from a third-gen Camaro. There isn’t a lot of room in the original 61ci engine bay, but FatMan and John fig- ured out how to stuff in a supercharged Pontiac 3800 (basically an Eaton blown Buick 231ci V-6) run- ning an NIC roller cam, a ZZ Performance-built super- charger system, and all backed up with a 4L60E automatic overdrive. The chassis is finished off with 17/20-inch 3030 Autosport wheels. DECEMBER 2024 27

When presented with an ungainly beginning, John did what hot rodders do and slammed it down on a bitchin’ chassis and personally hammered it 3 1/2 inches. John then leaned the front posts forward 9 degrees, hid the hinges, tubbed the rear wheel wells to the max, installed the sunroof from a ’93 Toyota Paseo, slipped on ’39 Chevy taillights, filled a ton of holes and smoothed out the running boards. John straightened everything and had One-Off Customs lay down the Lime Rock Green paint. John filled the beautiful Morris faux wood dash with Vintage Air, Speed Hut gauges, a Lokar shifter and AirRide controls. John built a custom center console, installed a Flashpoint wheel on an IDIDIT column

and Pontiac Solstice seats. Rha’s Interiors then cov- ered everything in Sierra Camel over black leather or square weave carpeting. John got the power rolling with a Ron Francis Express kit. I love the ugly duckling to swan transformation. John started with the oddest of beginings and has a rod that would be at home anywhere from the Detroit Autorama to cruising the streets of Long Island, all using the tools that hot rodders have been using since before WWII. The Morris sits slammed on a state-of-the- art chassis, is hammered to perfection, and has plenty of power with a modern tranny for all day cruising. I hope you’re out there working your own piece of automotive perfection and can’t wait to see it.

North 44 th

Annual Street Rod Nationals

The North Had It All

T he 44th Street Rod Nationals North was held at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center & Fairground in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for three days Sept 20-22. Michigan’s rich history with the automobile means cool versions of cars originally built “just down the road” rumbled into the Expo Center all three days. Discover Kalamazoo served Continental Breakfasts, organized a Parade and operated a bus to the shop- ping mall. Jenny Hinton coordinated the campgrounds while Lynn Adams, Ann Rose, Lollie Krogmeier, Lynn Hoyt, Melinda Johnson and members of the Mid-Michigan SRA registered incoming participants. Co-Host Clubs are a big part of why NSRA events run so smoothly and this year they included the Rod Benders, Mid- Michigan SRA and the Kalamazoo Antique Auto Restoration Club. Held in their home state, the MHRA had their Rod Repair Shop in full swing and the St. Joe Valley Street Rods hosted Games. Lois Hassing set up a great shopping experience in Women’s World and Sanderson Headers, Yogi’s, Karen Carter, Ann Rose and the ladies of the North Central Field Force hosted a Ladies Tea for 175 ladies. Randy Handwerk from the Northern

32 DECEMBER 2024

Michigan Rodders coordinated a Model Car Display and Jim Spaulding with fellow host-club members organized the Swap Meet. Located in New Buffalo, Michigan, US 12 Speed & Custom, a one-stop shop for everything that goes fast was honored as the Spotlight Builder. When it came time for the non-denominational Church Service on Sunday morning, Team Racers For Christ (RFC: serving people in the world of motorsports in the name of Jesus Christ through providing fellowship, pastoral care, evangelism and service.) and Mike Oginsky spread the good word. After the Awards Presentation many attending rodders headed straight for Burlington, Vermont, and the 30th Northeast Street Rod Nationals the next weekend. As rodders rumbled out the gate of the Kalamazoo Fairgrounds most were unaware the North and Northeast events would switch their order on the 2025 NSRA Event Schedule. The 31st Northeast Street Rod Nationals will be held September 12-13, 2025, and the following week- end the 45th Street Rod Nationals North will follow September 19-20, 2025. Whether doing back-to-back events or not, make your mini-vaca- tion plans to include cruising into early autumn to either or both of these great events. DECEMBER 2024 33

The Canadians always have some oddly cool stuff! Like Gerry DeLaronde’s too cool ‘66 Acadian Canso he cruised in from LaSalle, ONT, Canada.

Dennis & Sherry Brown love cruising their ’40 Ford Deluxe out of Steamboat Springs, CO, and have over 130,000 miles on the cruis- er. They built the rod with a Mustang II IFS running QA1 coilovers, Chevy 396ci big- block power, flared rear

fenders and won a “Rep/Safety Pick.”

Roger & Pat Tate out of Waterford, MI, picked up a “Rep/Safety Pick” for their sweet ’72 Chevrolet Super Cheyenne that has a 350/700R4 powertrain, 18-inch Americans wrapped in Goodyear rubber, and a bucket seat interior.

34 DECEMBER 2024

Bill Proos cruised in from Grand Rapids, MI, in his gorgeous slate gray ‘33 Ford three-window coupe rolling on a tubular IFS hooked to Boyds wheels.

David & Karen Ness came out of Dallastown, PA, and picked up a “Pros’ Pick” by Alumicraft Street Rod Grilles for their ’60 Chevrolet Brookwood station wagon that spins big Billet Specialties wheels, goes with LS power spinning a 4L60E and is always a favorite of ours—but where is Karen’s?

Perry Weaver picked up the “Super ‘70s” award for his '70 Chevy Malibu running 400hp Chevy 350 power, a TCI TH400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive, BFG-wrapped Cragars, a 12-bolt posi, and Candy Apple Laser Red paint with a black vinyl roof and Rally stripes.

DECEMBER 2024 35

Deb Duttweiler drove her “Lady Rodder Lane” winning ’47 Plymouth Deluxe sedan up from Longwood, FL, that her dad built with a Mustang II IFS, ’87 Corvette TPI power, a Corvette IRS, and S10 seats com- plemented with Pontiac Grand Prix seats.

It’s easy to love an odd rod as cool as Ted & Joanie Binsz’s ’34 Graham out of Three Oaks, MI, with a 402ci Chevy power- train, a filled top, a Pontiac rearend, a cloth interior, and he bought it at the Street Rod Nationals in Minnesota back in 1989.

Harry Lalagos’ ’38 Buick out of Addison, IL, may look stock on the outside, but the “Host Club Pick” winning rod runs a Chevy LS1/4L60E powertrain, a Mustang II IFS, a Ford 8.8-inch differential, and

a leather interior pat- terned after the stock Buick interior.
