Some additional terminology relating to shore tanks and gauging follows: Tank Capacity Table: a table that converts the measured vertical depth of liquid into a volume. Capacity tables can be calculated for either innage or outage gauges. Capacity tables are frequently called "strapping tables" or "strapping charts". On ships and barges they are usually referred to as "ullage tables". Reference Gauge Point: the point, on the top of the tank, from which all gauging must be conducted. It is usually directly opposite from the hinge of the gauge hatch, unless otherwise marked or indicated. If in doubt, consult the tank capacity table or your supervisor. Reference Gauge Height: the "official" height of the tank, at the reference gauge point, as indicated on the tank capacity table. Observed Gauge Height: the "measured" height of the tank, at the reference gauge point, taken when gauging. The observed gauge height is compared to the reference gauge height to determine if your tape has reached the bottom of the tank and /or to see if the tank floor has "flexed" between gauges.
