Your October Guide to a New England Leaf-Peeping Getaway
CONNECTICUT: KEEP GOING AFTER MID-OCTOBER When northern New England begins moving past peak, Connecticut may still have plenty of color ahead. The state's varied terrain creates a foliage season that stretches well into November. Connecticut's current 2026 foliage guidance estimates peak conditions in the northwest and northeast corners from Oct. 7-13, followed by eastern and western midstate counties from Oct. 14-20. The shoreline and lower Connecticut River Valley are projected for Oct. 28-Nov. 3, while the southwest corner may hold peak color into Nov. 4-10. These are estimates, not guarantees, and the state recommends checking its updated foliage reports as the season progresses. The Litchfield Hills are a particularly appealing destination, with rolling countryside, forests, lakes and historic towns. Later in the season, travelers can shift toward the Connecticut River Valley and shoreline. For Rhode Island residents, Connecticut is also one of the easiest ways to extend a leaf-peeping getaway into late October and early November. RHODE ISLAND: LOOK CLOSE TO HOME You do not have to cross the state line to enjoy a memorable fall drive. Rhode Island typically shows its strongest foliage in October, with the northern and western parts of the state offering some of the most heavily wooded landscapes. In the Blackstone Valley, drives through Lincoln, Cumberland, North Smithfield and surrounding communities combine wooded landscapes, waterways and historic mill villages. Lincoln Woods State Park provides another nearby option, with forested surroundings and Olney Pond. Western Rhode Island offers a classic rural backdrop. According to the Maine Forest Service, northern areas typically reach peak conditions during the last week of September into the first week of October. Central and western Maine generally follow in the second and third weeks of October, while southern and coastal areas tend to peak later in the month. That progression makes Maine a strong choice throughout October. The western mountains offer forests, lakes and sweeping views, while the coast combines autumn scenery with harbors, historic communities and ocean vistas. For Rhode Islanders, Maine works particularly well as a long weekend destination. An early-October trip can focus on northern or western areas, while travelers heading north later in the month can shift toward central, southern and coastal Maine as the color moves south. MASSACHUSETTS: WEST TO EAST Massachusetts offers an easy way to continue following the changing leaves without traveling too far from Rhode Island. The season generally begins in mid-to- late September, with higher elevations and western areas changing first. The Berkshires are a natural early- October destination, with mountain roads, small towns and broad views across the hills. Current guidance from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism places the state's peak color often around the third week of October, although conditions vary by region and year. Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires can peak earlier, while color can continue into late October in other parts of the state. For Rhode Islanders, Massachusetts works well as either a day trip or weekend escape. The Berkshires are an especially good choice when western Massachusetts is approaching peak, while central and eastern areas can provide additional opportunities later in the month.
