New England destinations for an October road trip
Take The Scenic Route To Halloween
You don't have to wait for Halloween night to get into the spirit of the season. Across New England, historic towns, wooded landscapes, coastal villages and centuries-old buildings take on a different character in October. For Rhode Island travelers, several destinations within driving distance offer something beyond the traditional haunted-house experience. Some go all-in on Halloween, while others combine seasonal events with historic streets, fall scenery, museums, shopping and restaurants. Whether you're planning a day trip or an overnight escape, these destinations are worth adding to the October calendar.
This year is especially significant because Salem is celebrating its 400th anniversary. The milestone is being incorporated into the October festivities, which begin Oct. 1 with the Salem Chamber of Commerce Haunted Happenings Grand Parade. The celebration will culminate on Halloween night with a 400-drone show over the North River commemorating the anniversary. The October calendar also includes markets, family activities, entertainment and other Halloween programming, with events changing throughout the month. Visitors should check the official calendar before making plans. Why go: For an immersive Halloween experience with history, entertainment and plenty of seasonal activity. Best for: Couples, friends, families and anyone ready to embrace Halloween. Road-trip tip: Salem is exceptionally busy in October. Check event schedules, parking information and transportation options before leaving.
