2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid Four-season capability meets improved fuel efficiency

The Subaru Forester has long been associated with all-wheel-drive capability, practicality and year-round versatility. For 2026, Subaru adds a hybrid powertrain to the redesigned Forester lineup, giving drivers another option for improving fuel economy without giving up standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. For Northern Rhode Island drivers, the combination is particularly relevant as fall gives way to winter and changing road conditions become part of the daily commute. A HYBRID FORESTER The 2026 Forester Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer four-cylinder engine with Subaru's hybrid drive system. Combined system output is an estimated 194 horsepower. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with Active Torque Vectoring is standard. The hybrid system also uses regenerative braking and electric assistance to improve efficiency. Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the Forester Hybrid does not need to be connected to an external charger. EFFICIENCY WITHOUT GIVING UP AWD Subaru estimates up to 35 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for the Forester Hybrid, depending on configuration. The manufacturer lists an estimated range of up to 581 miles on a tank of gasoline.

That combination is one of the model's strongest selling points. Drivers can choose a hybrid for improved fuel economy while retaining the all-wheel-drive system for which the Forester is known. The standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is designed to continuously distribute power to the four wheels and adjust for changing traction conditions. READY FOR NEW ENGLAND WEATHER All-wheel drive is particularly useful when rain, snow and slippery pavement become part of the driving equation. The Forester Hybrid also offers dual-function X-MODE with Hill Descent Control on its hybrid models, providing additional traction management for more challenging surfaces. The Forester Hybrid has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, giving it additional clearance over uneven surfaces and winter conditions. That capability does not make the Forester invincible in severe weather, of course, but it gives drivers useful tools for navigating ordinary seasonal changes. SPACE FOR EVERYDAY LIFE The Forester Hybrid maintains the practical interior that has long been central to the model. Subaru lists up to 106.6 cubic feet of passenger volume and as much as 69.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded.
