ADVANCING CARE TOGETHER

2023 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

WITH GRATITUDE C ommunity support has been an integral part of Overlake’s story since its founding more than 60 years ago. Donors past and present have generously contributed to ensure world-class care is available on the Eastside. The Overlake Foundation is grateful for your support. Your donation dollars are being used for the benefit of patients and families. You are making a difference. At the start of fiscal year 2023 (July 1, 2022– June 30, 2023), the Overlake Foundation launched Our Overlake: Advancing Care Together . This five-year, $55 million campaign leverages the support and partnership of our generous community to help us move ahead farther and faster than we could do without you.

Although recent years have been financially challenging for the whole healthcare industry, we are extremely optimistic about the future of Overlake and our ability to help ensure our community thrives. This comprehensive campaign creates a mechanism for individuals and corporations who share our vision to support the work needed to bring advancement initiatives forward while maintaining the top-tier care our patients need and deserve. In the first year of the campaign, our community contributed $16 million to help ensure that innovative programs and high- quality medical care continue to be here for the community we serve. Here are just a few ways your philanthropy supported and improved patient care. Together, we are caring for everyone in our community while adding new services and advances. Thank you.

DONOR SUPPORT BUILDS A NEW CATH LAB P atients suffering from coronary artery disease, valve disease, and other disorders of the heart can now often be treated with catheter-

Community contributions have supported all of the heart and vascular procedures that save or improve the lives of our patients. This year, Overlake physicians completed our 1,000 th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). This minimally invasive procedure enables patients to feel better and get back to their lives after a one- to two-day hospital stay. Patients are often surprised by how quick the TAVR procedure and recovery are.

based procedures rather than open-heart surgery. In a catheterization (cath) lab, our skilled doctors make small incisions in the wrist or groin and use catheters—thin plastic tubes—to guide tiny devices through the artery to the heart. As our capabilities have increased, the demand for catheter-based care has grown. With the generous help of donors Leonard and Norma Klorfine, Overlake has built and opened a third cath lab to serve patients with chronic total occlusions, a severe form of coronary artery disease. Our expert team and new state-of-the-art cath lab help make Overlake one of the top hospitals in the country for heart care.

CONTRIBUTIONS FOR CAREGIVER ADVANCEMENT M edical Assistants (MAs) play a critical role in our clinics, settling patients into exam rooms and completing preliminary work like blood

Darius Kaulius, manager of the Kirkland and Redmond clinics, echoes the thought. “They’re doing a year of hands-on training compared with others who do a school program and an externship. Our people are so much more skilled and ready for the job.” Donor support this year has helped ensure we can recruit and retain MAs through the apprenticeship program. Overlake receives top marks from patients on their experiences in our clinics. Our skilled and compassionate MAs are a big reason why. Above, from left: Andrea Turner, Director, Overlake Clinics (OC) Primary and Urgent Care; Ana Hernandez, MA Apprentice; Valerie Chrusciel, OC Chief Operating Officer; Hetal Patel, MA; Darius Kaulius, OC Manager; Kelan Koenig, MD, OC Chief Physician Executive.

pressure checks and updating charts so physicians can work more efficiently. With the help of our generous donors, Overlake offers an apprenticeship program to train new MAs on the job and get them fast-tracked on a meaningful and rewarding career. Apprentices stay in the program for 12 months, receiving 2,000 hours of hands-on training plus 10 hours per week of online classroom work, while Overlake pays their tuition. Apprentices are paid while training. They begin with one-to-one supervision from an experienced MA and progress to increasingly independent and complex work. When they complete their studies and pass a certification exam, they begin work as certified MAs. Denise Harker started as an apprentice when the program began seven years ago. She has since worked her way up to become a clinic coordinator and lead MA trainer at our Kirkland primary care clinic. “The greatest benefit of the program is that we get stocked with great MAs,” she says.

CARE FOR THE TINIEST OF PATIENTS J yotsna was just 24 weeks along in her pregnancy when her water broke. Her husband, Ujjwal, drove her to Overlake, where tiny Vamika was delivered. She weighed only 1 pound, 6 ounces. “We didn’t know much about caring for a premature baby and were so thankful that we were at Overlake so she didn’t need to be transferred to another hospital,” Jyotsna remembers. With the support of our generous community, Overlake’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is able to care for babies as young as 24 weeks of gestational age—like Vamika.

To support Vamika during her four- month stay, the NICU nurses taught Jyotsna the importance of providing skin-to-skin care daily, holding tiny Vamika against her chest to comfort her. Skin-to-skin care has been shown to help babies sleep and eat better and results in higher oxygen levels and weight gain. “Every day, my husband or I went to the NICU to hold Vamika,” Jyotsna says. “The nurses were so supportive and took the time to address all of our questions and concerns.” A life-saving treatment known as surfactant replacement therapy was given through a breathing tube, which helped coat Vamika’s lungs and improve pulmonary function. Because she didn’t have the strength to suck, Vamika received nourishment through a thin tube, known as a nasogastric tube, which is threaded through her nose, down the back of her throat to her stomach, delivering the breast milk Jyotsna pumped each day.

“The nurses were so encouraging when I came to pump,” Jyotsna remembers. “They made our journey less stressful. They took such good care of Vamika, we felt very assured when we left each day to take care of our son, who was 3 years old at the time. We knew she was in the best hands.” Finally, four months after admission, it was time to take their baby home. The only holdup was that someone at home needed to have the confidence to insert the nasogastric tube for daily feeding, which Jyotsna found intimidating. “Thankfully, the nurses patiently worked with Ujjwal, teaching him how to insert the feeding tube, and we were able to take her home.” “A month has gone by and she is able to eat without the tube. She’s a big baby now,” Jyotsna adds with a laugh. She weighs 10 pounds, 11 ounces; 10 times more than she did at birth. “Her big brother, Vihaan, loves her, and we’re so glad to have her home with us. Thank you, Overlake NICU.” And thank you to our community for supporting care for our fragile newborns.

THE NURSES WERE SO ENCOURAGING. THEY MADE OUR JOURNEY LESS STRESSFUL. THEY TOOK SUCH GOOD CARE OF VAMIKA; WE KNEW SHE WAS IN THE BEST HANDS.

MANY WAYS TO GIVE P atti Murphy’s Overlake story began in 1978 with the birth of her first son. She was impressed from the very start. “The nurses were so helpful and kind,” she recalls. The birth of another son followed in 1981. As an Eastside family with two active boys, the Murphys visited Overlake many times over the years. A particularly scary event in which Patti’s husband, Tim, had a medical emergency while on a mission trip in Mexico cemented Patti’s regard. “An Overlake nurse was on the trip, and she recognized that Tim was having a heart attack,” says Patti. “She took care of him and got him to a hospital.” When he returned to Overlake, cardiologist Joe Doucette, MD, was there to meet him and has been helping him stay healthy ever since. Patti joined Overlake’s Sonja Potter Auxiliary, a group of community volunteers who focused their efforts on senior care. It was a natural step for Patti, who has spent her whole life helping others. “We did a lot of fundraisers, ran the senior health fair, held pancake breakfasts, and so much more,” Patti recalls.

It was a busy day in the emergency department, but a nurse took one look at Patti and could see she needed immediate attention. “I’d had a mini-stroke,” says Patti. “The nurse took me right back and they took care of me very quickly. The doctor patiently explained what was going on. I could not have asked for a better experience in that situation.”

Below: Tim and Patti Murphy

“Anything to help the hospital care for our local seniors.” In addition to her volunteer activities, Patti became

a donor and continues her generous giving to this day. After many years of bringing family members

to Overlake for care, Patti experienced her own emergency in Dec. 2022. “My

cheeks and gums were numb,” she recalls. “I asked Tim to take me to Overlake.”

THE NURSE TOOK ME RIGHT BACK AND THEY TOOK CARE OF ME VERY QUICKLY. THE DOCTOR PATIENTLY EXPLAINED WHAT WAS GOING ON. I COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER EXPERIENCE IN THAT SITUATION.

Patti is doing well now and plans to continue giving to Overlake. “My parents taught me that when people need help, you help them,” she explains. “Everyone in our community will need medical care at some point, and I want to help make

sure Overlake is there for them.”
