FROM THE Directors Kia ora koutou and welcome to Camp Half-Blood!
We are thrilled to bring the electric energy and mythological mayhem of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical for Young Audiences to our stage this year. Part rock concert, part epic road trip, this show is the culmination of a joyful and dynamic partnership between Christ’s College and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, showcasing the outstanding talents among our students. We are so proud of the incredible amount of time, energy, love and joy they have each brought to the production, and we can’t wait to share it with you. For those new to the world of Percy Jackson, this story is about more than just missing lightning bolts and angry gods – it is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply resonant story about finding your place in the world. Percy is just a typical teenager whose behaviour has got him expelled from six schools in six years. Like many students, he struggles to deal with his dyslexia and ADHD daily, only to discover that these are actually the undeniable marks of a demigod – his brain is actually hardwired to read Ancient Greek and his body is built with the energetic reflexes for battle! Our quirky, magical trio are on an epic quest, not just to find a stolen lightning bolt, but to truly understand who they are, where they belong, and what mighty power they possess in a world that is often pretty scary. Our performers have also been on a journey to discover their voices, the joy of learning new skills, and the ability to challenge each other to be the best version of themselves. Our biggest struggles in life often reveal our greatest strengths, and this musical reminds us that the bonds formed through friendship are just as vital as the love of our family. Watching our students embrace these themes of identity, courage, and collaboration has been inspiring, and we hope that these bonds, forged in the fires of Camp Half-Blood, will sustain them well in their fantastic futures. We extend our sincere thanks to the incredible team who made this possible: the technical crew, the supportive staff and leadership of both Christ’s College and Rangi Ruru, and, most importantly, the parents and families who have cheered us on with such enthusiasm. Finally, to our extraordinary student cast and crew: you have attacked this fast-paced, demanding, mythical score with professionalism, heart and pure rock-and-roll passion. You truly are the demigods!
Now, sit back, relax and get ready to join our Killer Quest.

SYNOPSIS (Caution-Spoilers)
Percy Jackson is just your regular troubled teenager, until a school trip to the museum with his best friend, Grover, takes an unexpected turn… Mrs Dodds, the sinister substitute, reveals herself as an evil winged fury and attacks him! Mr Brunner, the Latin teacher, throws Percy a magic pen that transforms into a sword, helping him defeat her. However, Mr Brunner insists none of it really happened and tells Percy he will be expelled for his behaviour. At home, Percy’s mother, Sally, listens to his excuses and suggests a beach trip to escape his smelly stepfather, Gabe, and talk about Percy’s true father. Suddenly, a menacing Minotaur ambushes them, Sally vanishes, and an unconscious Percy dreams about a strange man in a Hawaiian shirt who gives him a seashell…
Percy wakes up at Camp Half-Blood, a sanctuary for children of the Gods. Mr Brunner and Grover reveal their true mythical identities, and even the chaotic camp director, Mr D, is actually a god. Percy befriends Annabeth, daughter of Athena, and along with Grover, our trio team up for Capture the Flag against Clarisse, daughter of Ares, and her gang. Percy, hiding in the bathroom, is hunted down, and his ability to wield water as a weapon is revealed. Now Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy, son of Poseidon, is the prime suspect. To prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods, Percy embarks on an epic quest as foretold by the Oracle, who also warns him of a friend’s betrayal. Percy, Grover and Annabeth team up, and Luke, son
of Hermes, gifts Percy his winged shoes for the journey, and so the trio cross the border into the real world. Grover shares the sorrow over Zeus’ daughter, Thalia, who was killed by a Cyclops and turned into a tree to protect the camp. The trio face more monsters, narrowly escape Medusa and the time-warped Lotus Hotel, and share a ride with Ares, God of War. On the bus, Percy is haunted by a vision of the lightning thief conspiring with Kronos, the treacherous Titan father of the Gods. Finally, the trio enter the Underworld, where the winged shoes nearly drag Percy into the pit of Tartarus, containing the banished soul of Kronos. Grover and Annabeth save him and discover the lightning bolt in Percy’s backpack, though they have no idea how it got there!
Hades, the God of the Underworld, appears to offer a tempting deal – Percy’s mum in exchange for the bolt… but Percy summons a portal and escapes his clutches. Thrust onto the beach, Ares reveals he planted the bolt in Percy’s backpack. Percy defeats Ares with his new powers and is reunited with his father, Poseidon, God of the Sea. Poseidon takes the bolt to return to Zeus and brings Sally back from the Underworld. Percy chooses to stay at Camp Half-Blood for the summer and is confronted by Luke, who reveals himself as the lightning thief! Their fight ends with Luke stabbing Percy and fleeing. The campers realise the war is not over, but they all stand ready to tackle the next challenge — bring on the monsters!
