FROM THE Directors Kia ora koutou and welcome to Camp Half-Blood!
We are thrilled to bring the electric energy and mythological mayhem of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical for Young Audiences to our stage this year. Part rock concert, part epic road trip, this show is the culmination of a joyful and dynamic partnership between Christ’s College and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, showcasing the outstanding talents among our students. We are so proud of the incredible amount of time, energy, love and joy they have each brought to the production, and we can’t wait to share it with you. For those new to the world of Percy Jackson, this story is about more than just missing lightning bolts and angry gods – it is a heartfelt, funny, and deeply resonant story about finding your place in the world. Percy is just a typical teenager whose behaviour has got him expelled from six schools in six years. Like many students, he struggles to deal with his dyslexia and ADHD daily, only to discover that these are actually the undeniable marks of a demigod – his brain is actually hardwired to read Ancient Greek and his body is built with the energetic reflexes for battle! Our quirky, magical trio are on an epic quest, not just to find a stolen lightning bolt, but to truly understand who they are, where they belong, and what mighty power they possess in a world that is often pretty scary. Our performers have also been on a journey to discover their voices, the joy of learning new skills, and the ability to challenge each other to be the best version of themselves. Our biggest struggles in life often reveal our greatest strengths, and this musical reminds us that the bonds formed through friendship are just as vital as the love of our family. Watching our students embrace these themes of identity, courage, and collaboration has been inspiring, and we hope that these bonds, forged in the fires of Camp Half-Blood, will sustain them well in their fantastic futures. We extend our sincere thanks to the incredible team who made this possible: the technical crew, the supportive staff and leadership of both Christ’s College and Rangi Ruru, and, most importantly, the parents and families who have cheered us on with such enthusiasm. Finally, to our extraordinary student cast and crew: you have attacked this fast-paced, demanding, mythical score with professionalism, heart and pure rock-and-roll passion. You truly are the demigods!
Now, sit back, relax and get ready to join our Killer Quest.
