of Hermes, gifts Percy his winged shoes for the journey, and so the trio cross the border into the real world. Grover shares the sorrow over Zeus’ daughter, Thalia, who was killed by a Cyclops and turned into a tree to protect the camp. The trio face more monsters, narrowly escape Medusa and the time-warped Lotus Hotel, and share a ride with Ares, God of War. On the bus, Percy is haunted by a vision of the lightning thief conspiring with Kronos, the treacherous Titan father of the Gods. Finally, the trio enter the Underworld, where the winged shoes nearly drag Percy into the pit of Tartarus, containing the banished soul of Kronos. Grover and Annabeth save him and discover the lightning bolt in Percy’s backpack, though they have no idea how it got there!
Hades, the God of the Underworld, appears to offer a tempting deal – Percy’s mum in exchange for the bolt… but Percy summons a portal and escapes his clutches. Thrust onto the beach, Ares reveals he planted the bolt in Percy’s backpack. Percy defeats Ares with his new powers and is reunited with his father, Poseidon, God of the Sea. Poseidon takes the bolt to return to Zeus and brings Sally back from the Underworld. Percy chooses to stay at Camp Half-Blood for the summer and is confronted by Luke, who reveals himself as the lightning thief! Their fight ends with Luke stabbing Percy and fleeing. The campers realise the war is not over, but they all stand ready to tackle the next challenge — bring on the monsters!
