A Fond Farewell Katie’s New Chapter Begins Whenever you hire someone for your team, you want it to be the best fit possible. You want your team to enjoy coming to work, be comfortable while there, and take on new responsibilities that open new doors for them. Every once in a while, you find someone who is the perfect match and completes your work family. For us, that was our lead dental assistant, Katie. After gaining some experience in the dental industry, Katie joined our team 10 years ago and has established herself as a great source of support and knowledge for our team and patients. Time and time again, she proved she has a passion for caring for people. However, all good things must end, and for Katie, her time with Caring Modern Dentistry will conclude in the most bittersweet manner as she prepares to take on an entrepreneurial journey full time. Katie has always had an eye for the camera and loved taking photos at her family events. She enjoyed capturing moments with others and documenting their lives through film, so she contemplated turning this into a full-time career. About three years ago, Katie took the leap and started her own photography business specializing in family-based photography. Now, her business has grown significantly, and so many clients depend on her photography skills to help immortalize their most precious family moments. Katie states, “I just feel fulfilled when I do photography. It really brings a lot of joy to my life!” Although Katie will no longer work in our office, those who miss her can still hire her for her photography services. You can see examples of her work on her website, KatiePaschalPhotography.mypixieset.com . You can also find her on Facebook at Facebook.com/katie.paschal. photography3 . She’s based out of Reidsville, North Carolina, and while families are her primary focus, she also photographs weddings and other special events.
While we’re excited to see what this new chapter has in store for Katie, we’re also sad to see her go, and I know she feels the same way. “One of the things I’ll miss the most is the sense of family we have at the office,” says Katie. “They all truly become like a family, and it will be hard not to see them every day, catch up on their personal lives, and work with Dr. Adams. It’s going to be tough to walk away, but it’s a little bittersweet because I’m super appreciative of every opportunity he’s given me.” After 10 years with us, Katie has made many memories and friendships at our office, and I know she’s sad to leave our patients. “I just want to tell our patients thank you for letting me care for you for so many years. I will miss you and our conversations.” I’m so excited for Katie as she embarks on this new journey. We’ve been through thick and thin together, and I’m thankful for everything she has done over the past decade.
Thank you, Katie, and good luck!
-Dr. Adams

ELEVATE YOUR END-OF-YEAR HOLIDAYS
The end-of-year holidays are festive but famously stressful, with fighting crowds and busting budgets. Here are five ideas to elevate your holidays by embracing new, simple family traditions. SHOP-LOCAL FRIDAY Avoid door-busting Black Friday crowds by shopping locally. Visit nearby shops as a family and try out their offerings. Or stay even closer to home by gamifying Black Friday into an online scavenger hunt. Make a shopping list and see who can find the best deals on each item.
near the end of December this year. Consider making gifts rather than buying them. Purchase supplies for a crafting or baking session and encourage your kids to create keepsakes or treats for loved ones, such as beaded jewelry, photo albums, trinket trays, original storybooks, artwork, cookies, or candy. Your kids will see that many recipients value their effort in making gifts more than the money spent on purchased ones. A YEAR OF MEMORIES The year’s end is a time to remember special people and events. Decorate a glass Memory Jar and ask each family member to recall a few favorite happenings or activities from the past year. Record each one on a slip of paper, drop them into the Memory Jar, make it the centerpiece for a family meal, and take turns pulling out and reading each other’s memories. This simple ritual can spark plenty of fun, plus warm conversations about the abundance that families share.
GO HUNTING OUTDOORS Work off that Thanksgiving meal by visiting a nearby park or trail for a hike and scavenger hunt. Give each family member a list of items to find. Small children might look for a pinecone or sparkly rock, while teens could hunt for a bird’s nest or a particular tree species. Your kids will learn about nature while enjoying some adventurous competition. FRIENDSGIVING If you aren’t overwhelmed by relatives during Thanksgiving, consider letting your children plan their own Friendsgiving celebration. This relatively new holiday has become a popular way to relax with your besties, and hosting a kids’ version can help children strengthen social ties. Serve Thanksgiving leftovers or let the kids plan the menu. YEAR-END GIFT FEST Three gift-giving holidays — Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa — all fall
“Had a crown put on today. Katie is always the best and does such great work. Thank you for assisting Dr. Adams and being so caring. Dr. Adams does great work. Also want to recognize Tabatha who works the desk. She is always so friendly and helpful.” –RHONDA J. “Best dentist visit ever! I recently had an appointment with Dr. Hodges. She is by far the best dentist I have ever seen — a very thorough exam and explained every step of the procedure. It is obvious she cares and treated me like a person and not just a patient. Her assistant, Grace, is equally amazing. Grace is both personable and professional. They make a great team! I genuinely enjoyed my visit with them and look forward to seeing them again!” –LARRY T. “Dr. Laura Hodges is awesome! The whole team there at Caring Modern Dentistry makes you feel welcome and like family. They really care. If you need dental care, go see them. They are wonderful.” –LORI S. OUR PATIENTS SAY IT BEST!

Toothache Terrors
Why Ignoring Your Dental Pain Will Only Make Things Worse
Many Americans fear the dentist, which can prevent them from scheduling appointments, even when there’s a need, or it’s been some time since their last visit. However, if you’re experiencing oral pain, even a minor toothache, you should stop putting off your visit to get the treatment you need. Putting off your dental appointments will only lead to more pain and inconvenience further down the road. A toothache can have many causes, and each condition requires a specific treatment to help you get out of pain and obtain a healthier smile. Early intervention is necessary to fix the problem causing your pain or discomfort. You may think you can just use an ice pack and ignore the pain until it goes away, but dental pain won’t cooperate with you if you take this approach. It’s essential to see a trained professional who can diagnose and treat the cause of your pain.
When you wait for dental treatment, especially if you’re already experiencing pain, you can expect your symptoms to worsen. There’s always a cause behind your dental pain, so you can’t expect it to disappear over time. It is going to get worse and could even become debilitating if you wait too long. It doesn’t matter if you’re experiencing issues due to a cavity, gum disease, or something else; when you delay treatment, the problems worsen, leading to more invasive work and higher dental costs. There’s never a need to delay dental treatment, especially if it’s causing you pain and discomfort. Prevention through good oral hygiene and regular dental visits is essential to avoiding toothaches and oral pain, but once that pain is noticeable, you need to visit a dentist as soon as possible. We’re here to help you avoid dental pain and improve your oral health! Give us a call if you need to schedule an appointment!

How Twain’s Predictions Became Internet Reality
Beam Us Up, Sci-Fi
How Fictional Tech Became Everyday Gadgetry
In the vast galaxy of science fiction, where flying cars, time travel, and alien encounters reign supreme, some of yesterday’s wildest dreams have become today’s marvels. It turns out that sci-fi authors weren’t just spinning cosmic yarns — they were predicting the future with interstellar foresight. Buckle up as we take a warp-speed tour through the sci-fi predictions that have boldly gone where no fiction has gone before, transforming from far-fetched fantasies into everyday realities. THE INTERNET The internet has become a part of our daily lives, and it’s hard to imagine a world without it. But long before dial-up, a well-known author predicted this critical technology. Though most people know Mark Twain for his literary classics, the
wordsmith occasionally dabbled in science fiction. In his 1898 story, “From the London Times in 1904,” Twain described a device connected to phone lines that would make the “daily doings of the globe” visible to everyone worldwide. Twain’s main protagonist spent much of his time on the “Telectroscope,” similar to how people are glued to the internet today. CELLPHONES Motorola engineer Martin Cooper designed the world’s first mobile phone in 1973, but his inspiration came from one of the most popular sci-fi shows ever. The first imagining of the modern cellphone was the communicator used in the 1964 debut episode of “Star Trek.” This forerunner to smartphones allowed the ship to communicate with Captain Kirk and his crew when they were on other planets.
MOON LANDING Author Jules Verne wrote about humans landing on the moon in his 1865 book “From the Earth to the Moon: A Direct route in 97 Hours, 20 Minutes.” Though he didn’t predict every detail of the Apollo 11 moon landing 104 years later, much of what he described matched this moment in space history. Verne’s three-man crew and NASA’s three astronauts both launched from Florida. NASA’s command module was named Columbia, similar to Verne’s spacecraft, Columbiad. After astronaut Neil Armstrong made his giant leap for humankind, he even referenced Verne’s book. Who knew that Mark Twain was the original tech guru or that Captain Kirk was out there giving us a sneak peek at cellphones?
