Vars community market needs vendor
Economic development study launched
EMBRUN | Future success for Russell Town- ship means working out an economic devel- opment strategy in the present. Township council has approved a contract with consultant fir m , McSweene y and Asso- ciates, for a business opportunit y stud y . The $28,750 cost for the stud y is covered through a grant to the m unicipalit y fro m the Prescott- Russell Co mm unit y Develop m ent Corp. (PRCDC). The first phase of the two-part stud y will identif y business and econo m ic invest m ent opportunities in the m unicipalit y based on a list co m piled of current retail and industrial op- erations. One of the goals of the first phase of the stud y is to provide a 10- y ear projection of local co mm ercial needs that m a y need either filling or expanding.

VARS | Set up a community market and the vendors will be there. That is what the Vars Community Association now hopes will hap- pen. “We need vendors,” said Jean Séguin, associa- tion president, during the group’s June 21 m eet- ing. Earlier this y ear, the Vars Co mm unit y Associa- tion (VCA) began researching the feasibilit y of setting up a co mm unit y m arket si m ilar to the popular far m ers’ m arkets that exist in neigh- bouring Cu m berland and other towns and cities. The idea was al m ost shelved as too late to do this y ear until the local Anglican diocese offered use of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church prop- ert y at the corner of Rockdale Road and Devine Street as a site. Now the VCA has space for 20 vendors’ tables and so far confir m ation for four vendors to set up for the first Vars Co mm unit y Far m ers’ Market next m onth. But Séguin said there should be at least a dozen vendors on site to m ake the project viable. “If we don’t have vendors,” he said, “then this will shut down.” VCA m e m bers discussed possi- bilities for vendors for the inaugural co mm unit y m arket. One proble m is that m ost local far m ers are in the m idst of their growing season and have nothing harvested y et for sale. Séguin and other association board m e m bers noted that a co mm unit y far m ers m arket is not just about of- fering local produce for sale.

The Cumberland Farmers Market, pictured here, is a popular part of the summer com- munity profile for the village. The Vars Com- munity Association hopes to have the same success with its own community market proj- ect if enough vendors prove available to fill the booth space at the inaugural event next month.
