Sustainable Professional Satisfaction Using Job Crafting to Avoid ‘Bore-Out’ Dr. Sonja A. Olson • Bore-out is not burnout. Chronic job boredom— characterized by passiveness, attentional fatigue,

and distorted time perception—can quietly erode wellbeing, motivation, and professional

efficacy. Before assuming burnout, assess whether disengagement is actually a mismatch between your skills, values, and current role demands. • Job crafting is a proactive, bottom-up redesign of your role. Research shows employees who intentionally increase job resources—rather than waiting for top-down change—experience higher engagement and lower boredom. Crafting is not a one-time event; it is a continuous, career-stage– dependent practice. • Use the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) lens to rebalance your work. Sustainable engagement happens when high demands are matched with adequate resources. Increasing structural resources (autonomy, skill development), social resources (mentorship, feedback), and seeking challenges buffers against stagnation and fuels professional growth. • Map your “before” and “after” role to activate change. Create a visual inventory of how you currently spend your time, energy, and attention. Then design an “ideal” version aligned with your values, strengths, and interests—followed by a concrete short- and long-term action plan. • Small, strategic shifts build long-term career vitality. Identifying transferable skills, pursuing targeted certifications, strengthening professional networks, and using evidence-based tools like WOOP can transform frustration into forward momentum—without necessarily changing employers.

Pericardial Effusion in Dogs & Cats Dr. Gordon Peddle , DACVIM (Cardiology) • The most common causes of cardiac tamponade secondary to pericardial effusion in dogs include neoplasia, idiopathic, and left atrial rupture in association with mitral valve disease. • While congestive heart failure (right- or left-sided) commonly causes small volumes of pericardial effusion in dogs and cats, these volumes serve more as markers of congestion than proving to be hemodynamically significant. • Prognosis for cardiac hemangiosarcoma is generally poor. Surgical excision of the right atrial appendage is often technically challenging, not always feasible, and affords limited survival benefit unless paired with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy and radiation (in the absence of surgery) appear to afford some survival benefit as well. • Furosemide is contraindicated in cases of cardiac tamponade secondary to malignant neoplasia or idiopathic causes. • The pericardium is considered to have low capacitance and low compliance. Intrapericardial pressure begins to rise once even a small volume of effusion develops, and rises significantly with additional volume beyond that point.
