before my husband left for his Sunday appointments (without remuneration) in a suburban town, he and I both felt keenly that consuming desire to have a small part, at least, in meeting Biola’s need, and we gladly send the enclosed check.” That prayer and giving go together is proved in more than one instance. "I have been praying definitely for the Bible Insti tute of Los Angeles for some time,” a Chris tian friend declared, “for my heart goes out to those young students. I realize that our Lord is depending upon such conse crated young people for His future work. When I heard that the Institute was in danger, I was greatly distressed. My own church is in need of money, too, but I feel I cannot overlook the need of the students for whom I have been praying. I could not continue to pray for them if I did not help a little at this time of need.” Student "Sacrifices of Thanksgiving" Present and former students eagerly joined the group of contributors whose gifts were marked by sacrifice. "Oh, praise the Lord and magnify His blessed name!” exclaimed one young woman in sending her contribution. "No one can rejoice more than the students of Biola, in what the Lord is doing there. That school has meant mo're to me than I can possibly tell. It was there that the Lord Jesus be came a living reality to me. It was there that I came to understand my Bible better.' It was there that the Lord dealt with me to give my life in service for Him.” Testimony and p ra is e a ccom p a n ied the gift of a recent graduate: "I came to B.I. several years ago broken down spiritually and physically. Really, I do not know how I ever got to the Bible Institute! But I was graduated in 1937. The years of Christian fellowship there with dear students and others have been the happiest I have ever known. It has made me utterly miserable to see the school suffer of late from lack of funds. I am so happy to know that progress is being made
the medical work to prepare for service in Africa. I love the Bible Institute and want to have a part in helping to meet her present need. I would send more, but I have been ill all summer and unable to earn much.” Dovoflon of Young and O ld The givers were from every age group, from little children to elderly men and wo men. One small boy scrawled: “Dear Dr. Talbot: I am so glad you thought the Bible Institute belonged to the people. I am giv ing you the money I have saved. I hope to come to the Bible Institute when I am old enough.” Two little girls, twins, whose father is an employee of the Institute in the engi neering department,'¿wrote on children’s picture stationery. Though the letter did not mention the fact, one of the girls had just returned from the hospital after having had a serious and expensive operation. It was not of themselves that they were think ing as they wrote: "W e heard the message this morning over the radio as to the needs of the Bible Institute. Find enclosed five dollars as our part in keeping Biola [italics theirs]. W e are eleven years old. W e both accepted our Lord and Saviour on June 14, 1935. W e love to witness for Him.” "This is my ninetieth birthday,” said one of the men who wrote, "and I want to have a part in saving Biola.” Hilarious G iving By Dr. Talbot's appointment, members of the staff of the Church of the Open Door were given the privilege of meeting at the church office many of the friends who came personally to present their gifts for Biola, for it was entirely impossible for the pastor to interview all who came. “I wish you might have shared with me the joy of standing here at the window," exclaimed a beloved church visitor who assisted in this task, "and might have witnessed the hilarious giving of God’s people. At times there were three to ten persons ‘casting their gifts into the treasury.'
Louis T. Talbot, pastor of the Church of the Open Door, Los Angeles, is shown burning a mortgage and notes representing a certain heavy Institute indebtedness, while a delighted congregation of approximately 4,000 people looked on. This joyous occasion was made possible through the Lord's blessing upon the cooperation of hundreds of His children, all of whom could say: "N ot unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy and for thy truth's sake." in the matter of clearing off the indebted ness. Praise His ■name!” Sending a small check, another student wrote: "I was graduated in June, but I hope to come back to the Bible Institute to take
