Scripture. The Antichrist, the Willful King of Daniel 11:36-45, will “enter also into the glorious land” (v. 41 )— “the land” in God’s sight being always that region which He has promised to His people Israel— and will "have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt” (v. 43). From the north, "Gog, prince of Rosh” (Russia) will “come into the land that is brought back from the sword, that is gathered out of many peo ples, upon the mountains of Israel” (Ezek. 38:5, 8, R. V .) and will "come like a storm,. . . a cloud to cover the land” (v. 9 ), saying, “T will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, . . . to take the spoil, and to take the prey” (v. 11). W hat is the “prey” that no doubt will be a goal of the hordes from “the uttermost parts of the north” (v. 15, R. V .)? The Dead Sea .contains, in potash and chemical salts, wealth said to be sufficient to "pay off the entire debt of Great Britain, and then run her government forever free of all taxes.” For a war-minded world, the potassium chloride of the Dead Sea waters, valuable for high explosives, will seem the most desirable of all spoil of conquest! Human selfishness will culminate in the Antichrist himself, the king that "shall do according to his own will” and “shall mag nify himself above all” (Dan. 11:36, 3 7). But the result of the war of Armageddon will be the defeat of man’s government and man’s military might (cf. Dan. 11:45 and “the beast” of Rev. 19:19, 20). “The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved: Come, behold the works of Jehovah, W hat desolations he hath made in the earth. H e m aketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; He breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; He bumeth the chariots in the fire. by the Reichsfuehrer consisted chiefly in a lengthy inspection of Germany’s naval and military forces and armaments. On the same day that Horthy’s tour began, the Little Entente made gestures of “friend ship” for reasons that are evident. Clearly, nations can reverse their tradi tional policies when urgent self-interest de mands a change. On August 23 the Los Angeles Tim es published an Associated Press dispatch from Budapest concerning “efforts of the Little Entente—Czechoslo vakia, Rumania and Jugoslavia—to align Hungary on their side while Germany is attempting to bring the nation under her sphere of influence.” The article continued to show the concessions made by the Little Entente nations, who "granted Hungary military equality, thus sweeping away mili tary clauses of the World W ar Trianon treaty by abrogating its arms restrictions” and “announced that six agreements—non aggression pacts and minority agreements between Hungary and the Little Entente nations separately—will be concluded in the near future. Hungarian diplomats, over joyed that Hungary is being wooed simul taneously by Germany and the Entente, ex pressed satisfaction that they had received ‘something for nothing.' ” Among the fierce enmities of Central and Southern Europe, diplomatic moves have both surface and hidden meanings. O f one thing the outsider may be certain: Each na tion, great or small, is scheming for its own advantage. Russia and Japan Seemingly past the “incident” stage and developing into an unquenchable conflagra tion, the Siberian-Korean border conflict at Changkufeng in August suddenly stopped. Because at that time the international situa tion made it inexpedient for either Japan or Russia to be engaged in an open and gen eral conflict with the other Power, an armis tice became possible. Once more, Llpp- mann's comment that “peace depends . . . on estimates as to the chances of winning a war” is justified. Almost any minor dis agreement can be made to serve as an “in cident” if a nation really wants a war. And Russia and Japan again have proved that an armed clash can be stopped if peace suits the selfish purposes of the Powers involved. Germany In the late summer, W alter Lippmann wrote: “As Germany approaches the point where she cannot buy materials, she turns more and more to the notion of obtaining them by conquest. “The materials she needs exist in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania and Southern Russia, and that is one of the principal reasons, perhaps the principal reason, why the Nazi pres sure toward these regions is so great. “The Germans will be in full mili tary array during the time when the Czech and Spanish problems are at the crucial point of decision. It is not necessary to conclude from this that they now intend to go to war. On the contrary, all past experience indicates that Hitler will increase the pressure

The most up-to-date book in the world is the Bible. It sheds more light upon the significance of present-day movements among peoples and nations than can any other book, or any magazine or news paper obtainable. A great English Bible teacher recently said: “You may incar cerate me in the Tower of London for the rest of my life; and if you give me a Bible but no human contacts, I will tell you what is taking place in the outside world.” I am fully persuaded that that claim could he proved. The trends of the day, the motives behind individual and national acts, all have been prewritten in the Word of God. This fact constitutes one of the many evidences of the divine authority of the Bible. — LOUIS T. TALBOT. and the threat to the breaking point, watching for some weakness on the other side, some crack in their armor into which he can drive his sword without provoking a general war.” Subsequent events have shown plainly that all the Powers affected have, been con cerned primarily with their own interests rather than with treaties or peace machin ery as such. Human nature—whether seen in individuals or in governments—is selfish. The Future But “W hy do the heathen [R. V ., ‘the nations'] rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” (Psa. 2 :1 ). God’s Word fore tells a climax of international rebellion against Him: “The kings of the earth set themselves . . . against the Lord, and against his Anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us” (vs. 2, 3 ). Thus the day will come when the apparent "self-interest” of the nations will draw them to Armageddon. Some of the objects of the nations’ greed at this coming final conflict are indicated in
