“Yes.” "W ere they strict about it?” "Y es." “Did they teach you to tell the truth?” "Y es,” "W ere they strict about that?” “Yes.” "Has any reaction taken place on these points?” No man learns the multiplication table from sheer love of it; but I never knew of any one whose mind was in reaction against the multiplication table. — J ohn H a ll in the Sunday S chool Times. And it also shows that at the early age of twelve years our Lord knew He was virgin bom. As He put the matter plainly in John 8:14, R.V ., "I know whence I came." 3. "And was subject unto them" (Lk. 2 :5 1 ). Although He was the eternal Son of the Father, and as such He owed no alle giance whatever to the creatures of His hand, yet He was also by His incarna tion the Son of Man who came to show forth the perfect humanity. Therefore He voluntarily subjected Himself to His mother and His legal father, thus setting a supreme example of what is right and proper in that institution of God, the family. 4. "T hat it m ay be well with thee" (Eph. 6 :3 ). This particular clause does not appear in the Exodus account of the Decalogue, but is found in Deuteronomy where Moses rehearses the law orally to Israel just before they enter the promised land. Paul quotes from Deuteronomy (5 :1 6 ). Golden Text Illustration E xodus 20:12 A good deal of nonsense is being palmed off on the community about the reaction of the child from overstrictness in parental training. When I hear a man say, "My parents brought me up so rigidly that a reaction took place in my mind and I have turned away from religion,” I have some times asked, “Did they teach you to be honest?”

tell us how we should worship God: W e are to worship the one true God, we are not to worship an image, we must not take "his name in vain,” and we are to set aside one day in seven as a day of worship. And now we have come to the

last six commandments, and the first one tells us how we are to treat our parents. This is the fifth commandment. Lesson S tory: This commandment says: "Honor thy father and thy mother." Can you think of ways that you can act which would be honoring to your parents? Yes, the first thing is to be obedient. "Children, obey your parents,” the Bible tells us in an other place. W e know that our Lord Jesus Christ was obedient to God the Father, for He left heaven and His Father and came to this earth to suffer and die for our sins. "God so loved the world”— and the Lord Jesus loved the Father, and He loved us too, and that is the reason He became our Saviour. Then you must respect your parents. W e know that Jesus was that kind of child to His mother, Mary, and to Joseph when He was a boy in Nazareth. He stayed quietly at home with them and journeyed with them when they went to worship at Jerusalem. When he was twelve years old and knew that He had a great work to do for God, His Father, still He went back to Nazareth with Mary and Joseph and stayed with them until He was grown. And last, you must love your parents. W e know that one of the last things that Jesus did when He was dying on the cross was to ask one of His disciples to take care of His mother. Do we love and honor and obey our parents? And do we love and honor and obey our heavenly Father?
