let this silver one remind us of his sword. His sword was the Word of God. It was a life-giving sword. Notice the red cross on it. Men turned from death to life be cause of Paul’s sword. Paul wanted to make alive instead of to kill. It is possible for us to have two kinds of swords in the day in which we live. Many people are becoming so discouraged that they are taking their own lives, as well as the lives of others. Others are using the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God (Eph. 6 :1 7 ), and by it are giving life to others. God is looking for people today who will, like Paul, use the Word of God to give life to others. modern times. And because of this fact, the sacredness of the home has been largely forgotten. But the prohibition against adul tery still stands in the Scriptures. Whoever tramples upon God’s law is bound to reap distress and misery; God is never mocked, and those who blithely turn their backs upon His commands bring trouble both to themselves and to their children. God’s command against adultery is not given ar bitrarily, with a desire to withhold good from man, but, like all His commands, is given "for our good always” (Deut. 6 :2 4 ). In many minds there is the thought that God’s commands have for their purpose the destroying of man’s highest pleasure. This conclusion is natural, because the natural mind is entirely opposed to God’s thought. The home is sacred in God’s sight, but often it has become common in men’s eyes, and has become so largely through that lack of rev erence for the marriage relationship which permits men and women to live in legalized adultery. Many philosophers, social work ers, and many other thinking people agree that among the greatest curses in modem times are the practices that break down the home. There is little wonder, then, that God should give His people this stern, clear, easily understood prohibition, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” God knew, if the modem wise man does not know, that the countenancing of adultery is the surest way to disrupt and destroy civilization in so ciety. II. T h e E x ten t (M a tt. 5 :2 7 , 2 8 ) According to our Lord’s own words, adultery is a thing of the heart, and the look of lust but reveals its presence. In the verses before us, He had just pointed out that the law covers all actions, it continues immutable, and its perfection is such that the least violation is as surely an infraction of the law as is the greatest crime (cf. vs. 17-20). Now, going further, He says that committal of the deed is but the consequence of the thought. This fact should arrest every man who prides himself in being outwardly decent and clean but whose heart is not the blood-cleansed dwelling place of the Spirit of God. It is impossible for any man to be right before the law without a change of heart. And that change is wrought only by the new birth (cf. John 3:1-16). As the prohi-

ond Saul is better known by the name Paul, which was given him after he became a Christian. These two Sauls had two swords. King Saul had the sword of death. W e will let this black sword remind us of his. You will recall that in an hour of great disappoint ment he used his sword to take his own life. W hat a sad condition it is when any per son kills himself! In turning Saul’s sword over, we find that the back of it is splashed with red, which reminds us of his blood that was spilled by his own sword. He did not consider his life as a sacred trust. Paul had a sword, but his was a sword of life, rather than a sword of death. W e will Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mark 10:2 And the Pharisees came to him and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. 3 Ana he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a hill of divorcement^ and to put her away. 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this pre- cept. 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter. 11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. 12 And if a woman shall put away her hus band, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. 13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and his disciples re buked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it. he was much dis pleased, and said unto them, Suffer the little chil dren to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 16 And he took them up in his arms, put hts hands upon them, and blessed them.
