“He was rich, y et fo r your sakes he becam e poor, that y e through his poverty m ight b e rich" (2 Cor. 8 :9 ). He had everything: He retained nothing, that He might share with us everything! Is that it? W ith humbled hearts, With tears of shame, we answer, Yes, it is thus. In the presence of this example all our gifts of love must fade and be forgotten. W e have no heart to think of them. Have any of us become poorer than we were, for His sake? . . . . Which of us has known voluntary poverty like His? Up to the measure of our consciousness of what we ought to be, are we perfect ?—E van gelical Christian. NOVEM BER 9 A Capable Umpire “And let the p ea ce o f G od rule in your hearts" (Col. 3 :1 5 ). The word “rule” is literally “be umpire." The Greek word means to act as an athletic umpire. The peace of God is to rule in your heart, like an umpire in a game. I sup pose one is right who says, “In a fellowship there is always the possibility of conten tions. The peace of God is the best arbitra tor to secure a settlement of them.” The peace of God is to be the umpire to decide every internal debate between self and God, between self and others. —R obert L. M oyer . NOVEM BER 10 Soul Prosperity "W hatsoever he doeth shall prosper" (Psa. 1:3 ). He who in all things recognizes himself as the servant of God may count on a suf ficiency from God for all manner of need, and look with confident expectation to God to really prosper him in whatever he does. But this prosperity will not always be ap parent, except to the eye of faith . . . . Doubtless the legions of hell rejoiced when they saw the .Lord of Glory nailed to the accursed tree: yet we know that never was our blessed Lord more prospered than when, as our High Priest, He offered Him self as our atoning sacrifice . . . . As then, so now, the path of real prosperity will often lie through deepest suffering. —J. H udson T aylor . " T h ee do I trust, cause m e to know the w ay wherein I should w alk" (Psa. 143:8). Are you in difficulty about your way? Go to God with your question; get direction from the light of His smile or the cloud of His refusal. If only you will get alone, where the lights and shadows of earth can not interfere, where the disturbance of self- will does not intrude, where human opin ions fail to reach: and if you will dare to wait there silent and expectant, though all around you insist on immediate action or decision, the will of God will be made clear. —F.
