Oliver Hepden THE FEMALE EUNUCH - GERMAINE GREER
BOOK
The Female Eunuch has served to be one of the most influential pieces of feminist literature in the 21st century. Its honesty, passion, and genuine scholarly content has allowed the book to remain as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. Greer focuses on the sexual repression experienced by women and how this symbolically castrates them into the titular “Female Eunuch”, exploring how this impacts almost all aspects of female life. Unfailingly frank, and at times even crude, Greer veers from challenges like “tasting your own menstrual blood” in her chapter “The Wicked Womb”, to bemoaning the idea that only when a woman is “impregnated is she completed” in “The Psychological Sell”. The Female Eunuch was controversial for its time, garnering criticism from feminist titan Betty Freidan, but support from activist Gloria Steinman, and while a level of this controversy has diminished, it retains its status as a vital read in the modern era. By reminding the public of the struggle of female liberation, the Female Eunuch has cemented its place as one of my favourite political reads and will confront any readers with its gripping account of the female struggle.
