Diet and reproductive rates in variable populations of two otariids Mandy Keogh | Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game | $423,341 This project will determine the reproductive and dietary history of two North Pacific otariids, the Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus ) and Northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ) by measuring progesterone, a reproductive hormone, in serial sections of archived whiskers. Archived whiskers will be used to determine reproductive events and changes in dietary stable isotope (C and N) signatures over time, thereby providing foraging information of females with different reproductive statuses.

Population genetic structure of Northern Fulmar bycatch John Garza | University of California, Santa Cruz $68,472 The sources of fulmars caught as bycatch in longline fisheries in Alaska will be investigated in this research. Additionally, the study will determine whether the fulmars originate disproportionately from particular breeding colonies. Further analyses will utilize existing samples taken at the breeding colonies (1992-2004) and from a bycatch necropsy program (2006-2016) to determine the genetic population structure of the species in Alaska and create a reference ‘baseline’ dataset for genetic stock identification.
