2017-18 NPRB Biennial Report

GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARDS

The Graduate Student Research Awards (GSRA) were established in 2007. These awards are provided to Master’s and PhD level students to support their efforts to address scientific, technological, and socio-economic issues in conjunction with the general categories of the Core Program. Award funds may be used for stipends and standard benefits, tuition or university fees, research-related travel, or supplies. Current funding levels are $25,000 per award, and students are limited to one award per degree. Applicants gain experience by submitting a proposal that reflects the style and quality of our Core Program research proposals, with some modifications for the student nature of the project. Awardees are also brought to the Alaska Marine Science Symposium to present their work to a broader audience and gain further experience in communicating their research to current and future peers. The award program has been highly competitive, typically receiving 50 or more applica- tions each funding cycle. Trends in the applicant pool show equal distribution of Master’s and PhD students. While the total number of awards may vary by year, NPRB strives to support a minimum of six students in each funding cycle. This investment in the future of the scientific community is starting to be evident in the appearance of past awardees starting to participate in the regular funding cycles. A longer-term plan for tracking the success of past awardees was implemented in 2016, including the establishment of an annual survey and extended metrics, such as graduation success and post-award employment in related fields.
