2017-18 NPRB Biennial Report

OUTREACH PROGRAM

Overview From citizen science projects and crowdsourcing, to ROV robotic competitions and marine science lesson plans, NPRB funding has supported a broad range of education and outreach initiatives. Since 2002, NPRB has supported principal investigators in their communication of scientific results, education, and outreach projects. As research programs evolved and expanded so, too, has the Communications and Outreach Program. Approximately $1.3 million have been invested in education and outreach deliverables since NPRB’s inception, which includes the Core Program, each Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (Arctic, Gulf of Alaska, Bering), and the Long-term Monitoring Program.

2017

In 2016, NPRB strengthened its outreach initiative by introducing a separate call for outreach proposals. This call was specific for those who submitted to the Core RFP with a maximum amount of $15,000. The separate outreach subaward enabled investigators to apply for funds that did not compete with Core Program research funding. Additionally, the subaward allowed for a formal, robust review and approval process independent from research proposals. With the increase in outreach funding from NPRB’s historic $2,000 minimum to $15,000, the subaward could support larger, comprehensive outreach proposals while offering a better mechanism to leverage resources such as marine educators, graphic/web designers, media production, and mass communication. In 2018, the Board approved of a $5,000 increase to individual awards up to $20,000, for a total program funding amount of $130,000.

Outreach: Data and information in salmon stock-recruitment analysis Milo Adkison | UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences | Fishes and Invertebrates | $15,000 This outreach projects consists of a one-day short course, targeted at stakeholders in salmon-dependent communities and fisheries that explains how escapement goals are set. Outreach: Spawning capelin in Norton Sound Jenefer Bell | Alaska Department of Fish & Game Fishes and Invertebrates | $3,100 Outreach deliverables include focus group meetings, struc- tured interviews, and email contact lists of residents in the communities of northern Norton Sound (i.e., Brevig Mission, Teller, Nome, Golovin, and Elim) to collect Local, Traditional Knowledge (LTK), which will help fill in missing data gaps and also inform the study area for our sampling protocols.
