2017-18 NPRB Biennial Report

MEETING SUPPORT

Support of Science Meetings and Events The North Pacific Research Board provides financial and in-kind support to a variety of ocean science-related activities. NPRB is a co-organizer of the annual Alaska Marine Science Symposium (AMSS). AMSS has become a mainstay of scientific communication and networking among researchers, managers, and students from around the world with interest in the North Pacific. In addition, NPRB has ongoing relationships with the North Pacific Marine Research Organization (PICES), the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission and a host of manage- ment and research agencies and non-governmental organizations working in the waters off Alaska. During 2017-2018, NPRB approved $85,000 in support of scientific meetings and events, as outlined below.

2017-2018 Alaska Marine Science Symposium The Alaska Marine Science Symposium (AMSS) continues to draw more than 800 people each year throughout the week-long event. For 2017-2018 combined, over 140 oral presentations and 500 posters were presented. Average annual cost reaches well over $100,000 to host AMSS each year, requiring the generous financial and in-kind support of many supporters including NPRB. Because of these costs, NPRB continues to seek additional supporters to con- tribute to AMSS. In 2018, NPRB successfully increased supporting contributions by $15,000. Meeting Summaries Approved meeting summaries for the annual spring and fall board, science, and advisory panel meetings are available electronically. Summaries are available for the 2017-2018 reporting period and earlier. To access the .pdf versions, visit: http://www.nprb.org/nprb/ about-us/#nprb_summaries.
