30 Years of Paul’s Bicycle Repair and Sports Exchange by Peri Hayes Local business owner, Paul Fagan, achieves a career mile- stone. This May marked Paul’s Bicycle Repair and Sports Exchange’s 30th year in business. As Paul reflects, “I had been involved with bicycles as a competitor and an enthusiast since I was 12 years old, so my background in cycling stems from my teen years.” Paul’s Bicycle Repair exists in the space formerly occupied by The Ross Street Variety, which was his in-laws’ business. While detailing his entrepreneurial journey, the father of four continues, “As for deciding to start up a bike shop, my children were going through sports-related activities and I decided to turn toward something that I know a lot about in order to fund these extracurriculars. I have continued on ever since.” “We proudly service trikes and bikes,” Paul voices with a smile. “I enjoy dealing with people more than anything, trying to help them out. I’ve been doing this for 30 years and I feel rooted in the community, having formed lasting relationships. I now repair bikes for children of the children whom I fixed bikes for years ago, which is multigenerational support.” While describing what Paul’s Bicycle Repair represents, Paul shares, “This is something that I have committed to and would love another 30 years in business. Due to health, my physical ability is diminished and I am considering a downsize.” Paul encourages those interested to keep their eyes peeled for his upcoming inventory reduction sales, as he notes, “I have a lot of inventory, and this will be part of my downsizing.” Discussing the longevity of his business, Paul declares with wit, “I lasted this long! I am too stupid to quit.” Regarding the
anniversary of his establishment, Paul reveals that he will be celebrating this accomplishment by focusing on his health. He speaks with optimism, “I’m on the green side of the grass, and we’re all working to get better.” Grateful for his team of two part-time employees and the support from his loyal customers, Paul cheers, “I’ve been here in St. Thomas for years, and have connected with many people.”
