If you’re ever in a jam, here I am! by Liz Gilroy, Port Stanley Festival Theatre Artistic Director
Making friends when we were young seemed to be such a simple thing to do, but as we get older, I believe we find it a much harder task. There were just so many places to meet potential friends -- school, dance class, the playground, the mall, the ice rink, the beach, etc. It seems we could have potentially made friends pretty much anywhere. As we age our lives get busier –- work, kids, aging parents, taking the kids to dance class, work ... you get the point. Although, once in a blue moon we meet someone and the ‘click’ happens, you’ve met one of ‘your people’. It’s often unexpected but when it occurs it is to be celebrated, and that new friend often becomes a member of your ‘chosen’ family. That’s what happens to Walter and Sharon in goldfish , written by Steve Ross. You’ll fall in love with Walter, a lonely retiree with dementia, who sits on his porch and watches the world go by. He’s a wonderful storyteller, loves to impart corny jokes, likes Big Band music, and egg rolls. We learn all about Walter’s life, the ups and downs, as he shares his past with Sharon, a mother of 2, who moves in across the street and opens a daycare. Sharon has some troubles of her own: her marriage is rocky; she can’t tell a joke, and she’s lost her spark for life. Walter becomes a lifeline for Sharon and eventually, her best friend. It’s a beautiful story about finding friendship in the most unlikely of places. I am so honoured to be closing our season with this World Premiere, running from August 27 to September 13th. A new venture for Port Stanley Festival Theatre (PSFT), this show will also feature 2 ASL interpreted performances on
