Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) can be an excellent way for homeowners to lower their carbon footprint while efficiently keeping their homes warm. Heat loss calculations are essential for creating the right balance between the energy requirements of a home and the naturally occurring heat loss through the

bigger system will inevitably be better. The thinking is that, if an ASHP is able to provide heat to a large house with 10 bedrooms, it should easily handle a smaller home with fewer rooms. However, the reality is that an ASHP sized to heat a larger home will not be as efficient in a smaller one. All oversized heating appliances, including ASHPs, consume more energy than those that are correctly sized to the property. Heating installers have the opportunity to discuss this topic with their customers and help them understand that an ASHP that is properly sized using heat loss calculations will lower their energy bills along with their carbon emissions. All heating engineers should be aware of this and be ready to have these conversations with their customers to ensure they understand their new systems. Installers can find more information below:

LAUFEN’s quick guide to choosing the perfect shower tray

LAUFEN Pro S shower trays have a hidden linear drain that seamlessly integrates with the colour of the tray.

EMMA MOTTRAM, MARKETING MANAGER FOR LAUFEN, OFFERS EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO CHOOSE THE IDEAL SHOWER TRAY TO MEET CUSTOMERS’ NEEDS…. When it comes to choosing a shower tray, the abundance of shapes and materials available in the market can leave customers baffled. However, informed suppliers and installers can steer their clients in the right direction. Emma shares her top tips for helping buyers narrow down their options and make an informed decision. START WITH SIZE The size of a customer’s bathroom will determine an appropriate shape and size for their shower enclosure and tray. For smaller bathrooms, a space-saving square- style enclosure fits seamlessly with LAUFEN’s range from 800x800mm to 1000x1000mm. Larger rectangular shower trays are more suited to bigger bathrooms, with LAUFEN offering sizes ranging from 1000x800mm to a super

repairable and easy to clean. What’s more, their surface structure is noise-reducing, anti-slip, and has a pleasant and warm touch. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR White bathrooms are no longer de rigueur. Dark colours have stepped into the fray, with moody tones a huge interiors trend. Before choosing your shower tray, consider what else is going on in the room. What colour are the walls or tiles? What brassware is your customer going for? What flooring do they have? Would they prefer their shower tray to blend in with the floor or stand out?

Fortunately, there are varying waste depths and solutions available to solve this problem. While some people prefer a shower tray that is laid on top of the floor, this look is less contemporary and works better in a more traditional setting. Additionally, a raised border around the edge can provide an attractive finish and be useful for containing water – which is more suitable for a family bathroom where children are regularly showering. However, elderly or disabled individuals may find a step-free flush tray safer and easier to use. CONSIDER THE DRAIN One of the most significant considerations when it comes to installing a shower tray is the position of the drain. This is critical because it ensures proper water drainage and prevents water from pooling on the surface. The drain on LAUFEN shower trays is usually positioned on the same side as the shower head and near to the edge of the tray to enhance your customer’s showering experience and ensure they are not standing on the drain. The new LAUFEN Pro S shower trays have a hidden linear drain that seamlessly integrates with the colour of the tray. Alternatively, the square-shaped drain cover for the Pro collection comes in three designs that can be matched to the five available tray colours. spacious 2000x1000mm. Fortunately, even for customers with awkwardly shaped bathrooms, you don’t have to sacrifice design and style. Solutions include a bespoke solution that is customised to fit the space available. LAUFEN’s marbond shower trays can be cut to size to suit all individual requirements.

CONSIDER MATERIAL PRIORITIES

When choosing a shower tray for daily use by multiple family members, it is important to consider the materials it is made from. Durability is key to withstanding daily wear and tear. Additionally, the appearance and texture of the shower tray are important factors to consider, and sustainability should also play a role in the design decision. LAUFEN has found a substitute for conventional resins in the production of its shower trays. The resin in Marbond trays is made entirely from recycled PET bottles, which has two benefits. Firstly, existing materials, such as PET beverage bottles, are kept in circulation for much longer, especially in the case of durable bathroom products that are often used for over a decade. Secondly, conventional resin is no longer needed for the production of Marbond products, reducing their CO2 footprint by more than 20%. There is also no compromise in the quality of the finished product. LAUFEN’s Marbond shower trays are durable, stable,

White looks clean and fresh, but LAUFEN’s new colours – Matt

Concrete and Matt Black – can bring a contemporary edge to your shower room. Look at all the individual elements in the room on a moodboard (online or otherwise) and see which colour tray works best. THINK ABOUT DEPTH When choosing a shower tray, you have the option of one that fits flush with the floor or one that is laid on top of it. The decision between the two may be influenced by the space needed for the waste. If the property is under construction, inform the fitter at the outset so that the plumbing can be accommodated. If your customer is renovating an existing space, their designer will need to check whether there is enough space for the waste.

PROJECT

LIMAVADY SHARED EDUCATION CAMPUS

TRANSFORMING A PIPE DREAM INTO A REALITY

MAINTAINING HEAT AND WATER SUPPLIES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WAS A CHALLENGE FOR SCOTT & EWING LTD DURING WORKS TO CREATE NORTHERN IRELAND’S FIRST SHARED EDUCATION CAMPUS…

A remote containerised boiler room was among solutions deployed by Scott & Ewing Ltd to ensure heat and water supplies were uninterrupted during construction work to create Northern Ireland’s first shared education campus. Involving alteration and extension works totalling 5,400sqft to the adjacent sites of Limavady High School and St Mary’s High School, the £7.8m project got underway in April 2021, with classes and activities for 1,400 students ongoing amid construction. The project required close, regular contact with principals of the two schools

to ensure they were kept up to date with the works programme. And further complicating the timeline and logistics was a mid-project visit by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of the 25th anniversary Good Friday Agreement celebrations. Works were carried out in two distinct phases, commencing at Limavady High School, where the front of the school was demolished to create a new entrance, office accommodation, staff rooms and STEM building. Adjoining science and general classrooms on the ground floor were also upgraded.

Services to the new and upgraded rooms were extended beyond the previous provision with the addition of new CAT5 water supplies and appropriate plant installed in the existing boiler house. New BMS controls were installed to control the new extension and upgraded accommodation. Raymond Scott, Contract Manager at Scott & Ewing Ltd, said, “As we were working essentially in a live school environment, great care, forward planning and co-ordination were required to maintain heat and water supplies at all times.

PROJECT

LIMAVADY SHARED EDUCATION CAMPUS

“Connections into the existing systems were planned for school holidays and particular liaison with the main contractor and electrical contractor was essential in this regard.” A second phase of the project, focused on St Mary’s High School, included demolition work to the front of the existing building to prepare the site for a new STEM extension and additional general classrooms. An existing boiler house serving the right- hand side of the school was located in the area being demolished, leaving large portions of the school without heat and hot water. “We overcame this difficulty by providing a remote containerised boiler room, containing a 300KW oil-fired boiler and a mains-fed 1000L DHW calorifier to cater for heat and hot water requirements,” said Raymond. “Also fed from this boiler house were temporary supplies for the gym/

multipurpose hall, which had also been cut off during demolitions.” Within the extension, a new boiler house serving both the extension and right- hand side of the existing school was built. Once commissioned, the temporary remote boiler plant was removed. “All permanent and temporary works were completed with no interruption to school supplies during term time,” said Raymond. Scott & Ewing Ltd worked alongside the main contractor Woodvale Construction Company Ltd to prioritise health and safety, achieving their target of zero accidents on site. The project was delivered under a NEC 3 Engineering and Construction Contract, Option B with priced bill of quantities. The pioneer project in the Department for Education’s Shared Education Campuses Programme launched in 2014, LSEC was awarded Fresh Start Programme funding in 2016, with the completed campus

opening its doors in September 2023. Founded in 1969 by Desmond Scott and the late Philip Ewing, Scott & Ewing Ltd is a leading mechanical contractor with a broad portfolio of projects across sectors such as education, health and restoration. It has established a reputation for delivering cost-effective and sustainable solutions on time, safely and to high standards. CONTROL SYSTEMS INSTALLED BY ACS WILL ALLOW A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE TO BE MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE NEW CAMPUS, WHILE USING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF FUEL… BMS CONTROL SYSTEM

ACS Controls supplied Building Management System (BMS) control panels, including two regulating underfloor heating, in the two adjacent properties comprising the new Limavady Shared Education Campus. Automating heating efficiency from a single digital interface, the BMS control system offers detailed insight into the buildings’ energy usage pattern. Identifying any wastage, the system will ultimately use the least amount of fuel to provide a comfortable temperature throughout the campus. Michael McElholm, Project Manager at ACS Controls, said, “This is one of the largest projects we have completed to date. Each phase had to be planned ahead, as the school was operational during the installation stage. “Although complex, this provided our

engineers with more vital experience and knowledge. We are very grateful to Scott & Ewing Ltd and ABAX Electrical not only for their excellent professionalism, but also for support and the provision of a seamless collaboration throughout the project.” ACS Controls has previously collaborated with both contractors on many occasions. “We are most grateful to Scott & Ewing Ltd for their early engagement and support throughout the design and build process,” said Michael. “Also the electrical contractor,

Abax Electrical, who extended their expertise and knowledge to us in this process, along with their excellent quality workmanship and handover.” Boasting more than 40 years of experience in the controls industry, ACS Controls designs, manufactures, commissions and maintains building management systems for commercial buildings. Using only high-quality equipment for its control panels and peripheral equipment, the firm prides itself on its prompt back-up and after-sales service.
