Besides improving her skills by learning new techniques and practicing what she already does well, Thérèse hopes to continue nurturing the creative spark in her grandchildren. “At age 4 and 6, they can already pick my work out of an exhibit of several artists without prompting.” To see more of Thérèse’s work, find her on Facebook at Thérèse GraweyArtist or visit her website: sites.google.com/view/therese-grawey-art/home

Martial Arts and Wellness Programs in the Heart of Wortley Village Eclectic Style Reveals Deep Passion Thérèse Grawey, a long-time Byron resident, has spent the last six years honing her pas- sion for painting and creativity into a diverse and eclectic art practice. Besides painting, she transforms items that would normally end up in the blue bin or garbage – such as fabric scraps, ribbon, packaging, and old lace – into paper, cards, and upcycled journals. Thérèse Grawey beside her painting in the Healing Through Nature exhibit at London Health Science Centre. Thérèse paints acrylic and oil landscapes and abstracts on stretched canvas or wood panels. She uses leftover paint in her paper-making process and creates her journals from a variety of handmade papers and pieces of ephemera that she makes. “I’m an experimenter,” Thérèse adds. “I don’t stick to a particular style or medium or even a set routine other than making sure I do a few hours of art every day.” Thérèse became an active artist after retiring from a 30-year teaching career. “Art has always been in my life in one form or another, but I painted my first canvas in 2019. I started for the fun of it and to see what I could achieve, and now I’m hooked.” Thérèse has only taken one formal art course that was part of her teaching degree. She taught art in her class throughout her career. Thérèse’s skills, however, deepened dramatically after retirement when she had more time to read books, observe other artists, and participate in local workshops. The outdoors, her travels, and the Group of Seven’s body of work influence Thérèse’s work, compelling her to convey her respect for nature. “I paint what I find most beautiful in nature, large vistas or small items, in the hope that the art will transmit what I cherish.” Art is Thérèse’s favourite way to spend time. “I love the challenge, the happy accidents, and the confidence that I can paint over a flop and make it into something new.”
