Time to Celebrate
T here’s just something special about birthdays, isn’t there? They give us a reason to pause, look back, and celebrate how far we’ve come, whether it’s another trip around the sun or another year of parenting victories (and chaos). In my house, birthdays have always been a big deal. I still miss my mom’s birthday call—she’d sing to me every year, off-key and all. Luckily, I saved a few voicemails so I can still hear her sweet, silly voice. The one song I don’t have recorded, that old radio birthday shoutout—you remember, right? Pretty sure it was The Beatles who sang a version of it. Well, the song always started like this, “Today is your birthday, do do do do do do, we’re gonna have a good time!” Pure gold. These days, the birthday scene looks a little different. As my kids get older, the guest list gets shorter and the themes... well, they no longer need 47 matching decorations and a handmade cake topper. I used to go all out—theme parties, DIY everything,
staying up way too late perfecting Pinterest-worthy details. Now, it’s more about pizza, good friends, and maybe a movie or some laser tag. And honestly? I love it just as much. I know I’ve still got a few milestone birthdays left before they head out into the world, so I’m soaking it all in. Whether it’s a big bash or a quiet dinner, every celebration is a chance to make memories. I’ll be there, camera in hand (and probably tearing up a little), trying to freeze time just for a second. In this issue, we’ve put together everything you need to make your own birthday magic, whether you’re the queen of DIY or prefer to hand the reins to a pro. However you celebrate, just remember: The chaos is fleeting, the memories last, and the pictures? You’ll treasure them forever. Go big. Take the photos. Eat the cake. And enjoy every messy, beautiful moment.

One student, in particular, stuck with them. In traditional classrooms, this student struggled to even begin writing assignments. But when he was given the chance to write a script and record In a world full of screens, endless scrolls, and viral trends, it’s easy to assume that today’s kids are just passive consumers of digital content. But at Be Loud Studios, a kid-centered, joy-fueled media organization in New Orleans, children and teens are flipping the script—literally. They’re grabbing the mic, hitting record, and turning those same screens into powerful tools for storytelling, collaboration, and confidence-building. Founded by two educators who saw something spark in their classrooms, Be Loud Studios was born from a simple question: What if kids had the chance to tell their own stories, in their own voices? The answer has blossomed into a full-fledged youth radio program that’s currently helping over 500 kids from across the city express themselves, connect with their community, and develop real-world skills in audio production. FROM STRUGGLE TO SPARK
to write, record, and edit real radio shows. Their work airs on WHIV-FM and is expanding to WWNO, giving young voices a literal platform across the airwaves. Their Pass the Mic teacher fellowship trains educators to bring podcasting into their own classrooms, equipping them with gear, funding, and coaching. This year alone, 12 fellows helped 400 students across the city create classroom- based media projects, from science explainers to creative writing performances. Through community partnerships, Be Loud extends its reach even further. From ongoing collaborations with Son of a Saint to projects with youth-led climate initiatives, they are always on the move recording, amplifying, and celebrating kids doing incredible work. TURNING UP THE VOLUME So how can you support Be Loud’s mission? Start simple: Follow them on Instagram @beloudstudios, listen to the Be Loud Radio Hour on Spotify (or your preferred listening platform), or check out their latest youth-made podcasts. From donating gear to offering mentorship, volunteering, or contributing financially through their website (beloudstudios. org), every bit helps amplify the youth voice in New Orleans. With each passing year, Be Loud Studios’ impact grows louder and so does their commitment to empowering young voices. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a neighbor, or simply someone who believes in the next generation, Be Loud is calling. Let’s listen.
become a different kid,” Turner says. “He became the kid we knew—just finally in the right setting.” That setting—an authentic, student- run radio space—quickly grew from a classroom experiment into a school-wide show and, eventually, an independent nonprofit. Since becoming a 501(c)(3) in 2019, Be Loud has transformed into a citywide hub for youth voice, creativity, and community. MORE THAN A MIC At its core, Be Loud Studios is about more than making great radio. The organization is guided by three C’s: competence, connection, and choice. These are the building blocks of the confidence that Be Loud aims to instill in every child who walks through its doors. Competence comes from real skill- building, like interviewing strangers, mixing audio, and producing episodes for air. Connection is created through collaboration, community outings, and exploring New Orleans with a fresh lens. “One of the biggest things we can do for kids is to make them feel connected,” Turner says. “To each other, to adults, and to their city.” And then there’s choice. Be Loud gives young people agency over what they create, where they go, and what they talk about, whether that’s haunted houses, mental health, or climate change. (SOUND)WAVES OF SUPPORT Be Loud’s programming is as rich and dynamic as the kids it serves. The core radio program runs year-round, bringing together middle school “DJs” and high school “Junior Producers” every Saturday

14 JULY 2025 | NOLAFAMILY.COM pacing yourself and setting clear boundaries between work and family time. operations simultaneously. Remember that sustainable success comes from Meet Lisa, a single mom whose passion for skincare and mindful parenting shines as brightly as her complexion. Lisa is the owner of Skinolagy, a one-woman skin health studio in Metairie, where she blends holistic beauty with hard-earned hustle. As a licensed esthetician, former dental hygienist, and proud mom, Lisa brings a grounded, intentional energy to everything she does—whether she’s helping clients glow naturally or creating judgment-free heart-to-hearts with her daughter. With a parenting style rooted in supportive guidance and a business mindset that champions starting small and staying present, Lisa is proof that when passion meets purpose, magic (and beautiful skin) happens. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR COMPANY? LISA: My passion for holistic skincare inspired me to launch my company. I created a business focused on skin health using organic products and noninvasive treatments that genuinely work. With expertise in facial techniques and a commitment to holistic approaches, I help women rediscover their confidence through healthier skin. I find deep fulfillment in combining my nurturing nature with my hands-on skills to transform how women feel about their natural beauty. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE MOMS WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS? LISA: Start small, and scale gradually to balance business demands with family responsibilities. As an entrepreneur, you’ll wear multiple hats—handling marketing, inventory, sales, and
Child: Allie (11) Occupation: Owner of Skinolagy, Licensed Esthetician, and Dental Hygienist Hobbies: Skincare, working out, and spending time with my daughter
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE CAREER AND FAMILY LIFE? LISA: I prioritize quality time over quantity with my daughter. While balancing entrepreneurship and parenting is challenging, my daughter’s happiness remains my top priority. When we’re together, I provide my undivided attention [by] truly listening and collaboratively addressing her concerns. This intentional presence allows me to succeed both as a business owner and as a parent. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST PARENTING SURPRISE? LISA: How much my daughter teaches me—especially about patience and being present. Having a child tests your patience. I’ve never known how patient I can be. Sometimes they do things, and it just drives you crazy, but you have to bite your tongue and hold it. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PARENTING STYLE? LISA: I’d describe my parenting style as Supportive Guidance—giving her the freedom to make her own choices while being there emotionally to support, encourage, and build a safe, trusting bond. WHAT’S A TYPICAL WEEKEND LIKE FOR YOUR FAMILY? LISA: Anything outdoors, whether
it be the park, walking around the neighborhood, [or] going to outdoor events/festivals. WHAT’S ONE THING YOU HOPE YOUR CHILD LEARNS FROM YOU? LISA: I hope my child learns to always be considerate of others—their feelings, their experiences, and what they may be going through. WHAT’S ONE PARENTING HACK YOU SWEAR BY? LISA: A game we call “We listen and we don’t judge.” We take turns sharing something hard or embarrassing, then say together, “We listen and we don’t judge.” It builds trust and honesty. WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOU KNEW BEFORE BECOMING A MOM? LISA: That raising a child isn’t textbook— you learn as you go. As long as you’re doing it out of love, you’re doing it right. MOMENTS THAT MATTER: Celebrating Milestone Birthdays
By Madison Voorhies
B irthdays can be a huge deal for many people (i.e., those who celebrate their birthday all month long… I see you, and I feel you), but we all know some birthdays are bigger than others. This isn’t because of the size of the party or the number of attendees, but because of what they represent. Milestone birthdays mark big turning points in our lives, times when we pause to celebrate not just another year but a leap forward in growth, maturity, and identity. Whether it’s a baby’s very first candle or a young adult’s first adult beverage, these special birthdays offer families the chance to reflect, honor, and have a little fun along the way. 1ST BIRTHDAY That first year flies by, and before you know it, your baby is face-first in a smash cake (unless they’re not, because in my experience, not all babies love the attention nor the mess—and that’s okay!). Rather than focusing on over-the-top plans, lean into the joy of marking this once-in-a-lifetime moment. It’s a chance
and age-appropriateness. Gifts that support hobbies or self-expression, like sketchbooks, headphones, or personalized décor, also go a long way in honoring this new chapter. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t throw a party for your new teen; just know that the best celebrations at this age are the ones that make them feel seen, heard, and trusted as they step into this exciting new phase of life. SWEET 16 This milestone is often glamorized in pop culture as the first real taste of adulthood—a moment defined by newfound freedom, independence, and possibility. And we know: They’re not adults quite yet, but I think we all remember how Ariel was acting in The Little Mermaid … just food for thought. Whether it’s getting a driver’s license, staying out later, or simply feeling more grown-up, turning 16 carries a unique excitement that sets it apart from other birthdays, and the “sweet 16” is often a rite of passage. From themed bashes and
to celebrate how far you’ve all come— parents included. Think cozy gatherings, heartfelt touches, and plenty of photos to capture the memories. A first birthday can be as simple as a picnic in the park or a sweet celebration at home, with keepsakes like a handprint painting or imprint, a special storybook, or notes from loved ones to treasure for years to come. 13TH BIRTHDAY Sure, it may seem a little weird to skip all the way from one to 13 when discussing birthdays, but becoming a teenager is a big deal! Thirteen often marks the beginning of a new sense of independence, identity, and emotional growth. It’s also when birthday parties can start to evolve. It’s less about characters and cupcakes, and more about experiences (although we always recommend cupcakes… whether they’re for you or your child, we won’t judge). Sleepovers, escape rooms, or movie nights with a select group of friends may strike the right balance of excitement
18 JULY 2025 | NOLAFAMILY.COM
beach weekends with friends to low-key family dinners, how you celebrate isn’t as important as what you’re celebrating: The shift toward independence and the first steps into emerging adulthood. Consider marking the moment with a special outing, custom jewelry, or a first set of car Turning 18 signifies the legal threshold of adulthood, a transition loaded with meaning and responsibility. From the right to vote to high school graduation, this birthday often coincides with life- changing decisions. Celebrations might be more grown-up; think concerts, weekend trips, or small gatherings that reflect the birthday teen’s personality. Sentimental gifts, like handwritten letters from family or heirloom items, can help ground them as they step into adulthood. 21ST BIRTHDAY keys if the time is right. 18TH BIRTHDAY In the U.S., turning 21 is often associated with legal drinking, but this milestone is about so much more. It’s a moment to celebrate full adult independence, often marked by college graduations, first apartments, or even full-time jobs. Families can support this transition by encouraging meaningful celebrations like a dinner out, a mocktail party, or even a gift that supports new responsibilities, like a cooking class, budgeting tools, or a “starter kit” for adulting. It’s the perfect time to toast to the future—responsibly, of course. GOLDEN BIRTHDAY A golden birthday happens just once when your age matches the date you were born. Whether it’s turning 7 on the 7th or 30 on the 30th, it’s a fun excuse for a themed party that truly shines. Think gold decorations, shimmering cupcakes, and a special outfit that can turn even a small gathering into something memorable. Because golden birthdays can happen at any age, they’re a great opportunity to get creative, make someone feel seen, and embrace a little sparkle. Milestone birthdays remind us that life is a series of meaningful moments, some small and some spectacular. However you choose to celebrate, these birthdays give families the chance to pause, connect, and mark the passage of time with intention. And that’s always worth a party.

Holistic Beauty Swaps for Quick-Fix Trends By Sanonna Al Taweel
desire for instant gratification. But what’s often left out of the sleek marketing and 15-second Instagram reels are the long-term effects of these medications; effects that can become a lifetime cycle of dependency. Weight loss medications often come with side effects like nausea, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Not to mention that you’re likely to gain back the weight you lost if you ever come off the medication. Similarly, though less invasive, cosmetic fillers have risks like allergic reactions, infections, and unnatural facial expressions. Beyond the physical effects of these products, harmful mindsets can accompany their introduction. Relying on fillers and medications to make you feel beautiful can foster a negative self-image, take a toll on your mental health, and fuel insecurity. Instead of chasing temporary results, turn to holistic methods that focus on nurturing your body and mind. Equating beauty with wellness is the first step to a sustainable beauty routine. NOURISH FROM WITHIN A nutrient-rich diet full of antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins helps support
are other ways to take care of your appearance, maintain your long-term health, and boost self-confidence, all without playing into the beauty industry’s quick-fix culture. The cycle of quick, seemingly easy cosmetic fixes isn’t new. The pursuit of the “perfect body” through medication and treatments has been around for almost a century. According to the American Medical Association, the first weight loss drug (also known as a GLP- 1) was developed in the 1930s with the introduction of dinitrophenol (DNP). And cosmetic procedures like fillers have an even older history, with the first facial augmentation hitting the scene after the invention of the syringe in the late 1800s. Over the years, fillers and weight loss drugs have established themselves as staples in the beauty industry, partly due to their popularity with celebrities. And now, with the rise of social media and influencer culture, the prioritization of appearance over health doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Because, let’s be honest, the idea of popping a pill and dropping 10 pounds in less than a month seems pretty appealing. It taps into our
If you watched the Super Bowl this year, you may have seen an ad touting its medication as the sensible solution to the rising rates of obesity and associated health risks. Although at first glance the medication appears to be a great alternative to the high prices of name- brand weight loss drugs, a mere five minutes of Google searching reveals that the advertised medication has not been FDA-approved, a crucial step in ensuring safety and effectiveness. Unfortunately, this is just another example of the modern wellness industry capitalizing on the desperation of consumers to pursue “quick-fixes” over sustainable, evidence- based approaches that prioritize long- term health. The same pattern plays out in the market for cosmetic fillers: Promises of instant youth and flawless skin with minimal effort, all without a single mention of the risks. Behind the airbrushed ads and glossy promises lies the relentless pressure from the beauty industry to look young and flawless. This pressure convinces many women that the only path to acceptance and confidence is through products that offer instant and perfect results. Frankly, it’s a lie. There

skin elasticity, hormone balance, and energy levels. Hydration and quality sleep also play a vital role in maintaining youthful skin and overall vitality. GUT HEALTH = SKIN HEALTH A healthy gut microbiome can dramatically improve digestion, immunity, inflammation, and even acne or rosacea. Incorporate fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, and yogurt, or consider a high- quality probiotic to help restore gut balance and, in turn, support clearer, calmer skin. MOVE WITH INTENTION Activities like strength training, yoga, or even daily walks help shape your body naturally while promoting mental clarity and emotional balance. Blue light exposure and chronic scrolling can disrupt sleep and stress the nervous system. Unplugging in the evenings and prioritizing seven to nine hours of quality sleep helps the body repair itself. COLLAGEN-BOOSTING SKINCARE + NUTRITION Support your skin’s structure from the inside out by incorporating collagen-rich foods (bone broth, fish, egg whites) and collagen supplements (marine or grass- fed). Topically, use vitamin C, retinol, and peptides to encourage collagen production and skin plumpness. RED LIGHT THERAPY A non-invasive, clinically supported tool that helps reduce fine lines, improve elasticity, and stimulate cellular repair. Just 10–20 minutes a few times per week can lead to visible results over time, DIGITAL DETOX & BEAUTY SLEEP without injecting anything under the skin. EMBRACE GRACEFUL AGING Rather than trying to erase every sign of aging, shift your perspective to honoring your skin and features as they evolve. Confidence, joy, and authenticity are more powerful (and attractive) than perfection. Beauty isn’t injected or prescribed, it’s cultivated through care and self-respect. The most radiant version of you is the one who feels strong, healthy, and confident. When you opt out of quick-fix culture and pursue holistic wellness, you’re creating a foundation for a sustainable life.
