PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | DAVID WILKS

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The last month saw a lot of action at the Club with both the Men’s and Ladies’ Invitationals and other events too numerous to mention. We have hosted our friends and colleagues, enjoyed time with each other and gotten the most out of everything this Club offers. The South Course is in fantastic condition and our tennis courts are playing their best in years. We will soon put them to the test when we host the Delaware State Open Tennis Championships, which is always such a fun event to watch. What a great time of year. Many of us continue, of course, to put in the hours on the proposed irrigation and North Course projects. Andrew Green, Paul Roche and Darin Brevard visited the Club recently and explained their assessments and ideas from their architectural, irrigation and agronomic perspectives. About 30 of our directors, past presidents and members who have been working very hard on all this attended and asked all their questions. All of us were very impressed and walked away with a sense of assurance and inspiration. These links VIDEO 1 and VIDEO 2 will take you to a video of the presentation and this link RENDERING will take you to Mr. Green’s rendering of his plans. (The quality of the video may not be fabulous, but the message comes through well.) The financial and timing sides of the equation are still not clear enough to make any definitive decisions. But we will continue to keep you posted as we keep learning more. In the meantime, we can all enjoy this, the best time of year. We live in a country where we can say, believe, worship and associate with whatever and whomever we want. I know that I take those freedoms for granted far more than I should. The Fourth of July is a day when I am reminded that what we have is unique in human history. We can disagree, of course, on how we should do things and whether we are on the right track as a country. But we have the right to disagree with each other and say what is on our minds. Celebrating our differences, appreciating our right to our own opinions and honoring the men and women who have sacrificed to preserve our way of life are big parts of what the Fourth is all about. The celebration at the Club is a highlight of the year for so many of us.If you are in town, I hope you can join the fun. Our corner of this great country is the perfect place for it.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE | PHIL IANNELLI

MANAGEMENT TEAM

Christine Jordan Director of Clubhouse Operations

Summer Greetings!

July has arrived—and this time, the weather and the Club calendar are in perfect agreement. With sunshine overhead and a full slate of events ahead, this truly is the heart of the season. From golf and tennis tournaments to junior activities, swim meets, and our always-popular Lobster Night, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the Club this month. And of course, don’t miss the highlight of the season: our July 4th celebration—a can’t-miss tradition that brings the entire community together. A Quick Word About Expectations . . . With no major renovations or projects underway at the moment, our attention has naturally turned to the day-to-day details—the smaller things that, if left unaddressed, can have a big impact on everyone’s experience. These issues mainly relate to how members and guests use the Club, and, in some cases, expectations are not being fully met. Before we talk about rules, let’s talk about awareness. The goal isn’t to penalize—it’s to inform. So, in the spirit of keeping everyone on the same page, here’s a quick refresher on a few key topics that have recently come to light:

Tip Tribbitt, CEC Executive Chef

Mindy Blumetti Chief Financial Officer

Meghan Spero, PGA Membership Development & Communications Manager

Steve Buenaga Human Resources Manager

Parking Lot Safety Let’s all take a moment to drive more mindfully on Club property. Recent concerns include: Speeding Failing to yield to pedestrians Driving the wrong way

Jonathan Urbanski Director of Golf Courses & Grounds

Michael Shank, PGA Director of Golf

Letting children run unattended Using cell phones while driving

Liezel Huber Director of Racquets and Sports

Please slow down, stay alert, and prioritize safety—especially with so many children and families around.

Clark Verchick Chief Engineer

Supervision of Children A friendly reminder: children under the age of ten must not be left unattended anywhere on Club property. For everyone's safety and enjoyment, parents are expected to supervise their children at all times and be mindful of how their behavior affects others. Guest Privileges We love seeing new faces, and guests are always welcome—within guidelines. Each area of the Club (golf, racquets, fitness, pool) has specific rules on the number and frequency of guests. Members are responsible for ensuring guests are familiar with Club rules and always accompanying them.

Dress Code Dress expectations vary by location—so be aware of where you are: Pub37, the Grill, Tavern, and Main Lobby each have distinct dress codes – formal can move to casual but casual can’t move to formal Please be mindful of collar requirements, denim restrictions, appropriate skirt/short lengths, shirts that tuck-in and hats that are removed indoors. GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE | PHIL IANNELLI

If you’re unsure, the Club handbook is your best resource—or just ask!

Event Cancellations and No-Shows Popular events often have waitlists. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows not only impact planning—they also deny other members a chance to participate. Please notify the Club promptly if your plans change.

Corkage Policy Bringing your own wine? Great! Just be sure:

The bottle is not a duplicate or similar to something on the Club’s wine list It’s something truly unique or meaningful from your personal collection You’re observing the spirit of the policy: to enjoy a special bottle alongside a Chef-prepared meal in the DINING ROOM. Generally, a typical California Cabernet doesn’t qualify.

Golf Course Etiquette We all share the courses—let’s treat them with care: Maintain a proper pace of play Rake bunkers after use Replace/fill divots and repair ball marks Obey cart rules and signage Respect appropriate attire rules Keep all electronics silent—no music

Member Conduct Courtesy, respect, and consideration are cornerstones of your club community. The Club’s published Guiding Principles of Member Conduct ask members to behave as ladies and gentlemen, treating one another—and staff—with kindness and respect.

A Final Note Parking lots are for vehicles, locker rooms are for changing your shoes.

Why It All Matters Every rule and expectation is crafted not by management, but by your fellow members—people just like you who care about protecting the spirit of the Club. When followed collectively, these small standards create the atmosphere, hospitality, and community cherished by all. They’re what make this place special—and what make you proud to be members. If you’re unsure about any detail or would like to review the complete guidelines, the Club Handbook is just a click away. Or feel free to reach out to me directly—I’m always happy to help clarify or answer questions. As always, I look forward to seeing you around your Club this summer. Enjoy every moment! Phil Iannelli

We had a special visit from our 1971 U.S. Amateur champion Gary Cowan. Mr. Cowan donated his golf clubs from the 1971 championship to our Heritage Hallway. At the front of the collection is the 9-iron he used to hole out from 135 yards on 18 South for an eagle two to win.

We've curated a dynamic calendar packed with exciting events and family-friendly activities to keep the good times rolling. This is your summer. Make it extraordinary—only at Wilmington Country Club.

BOOK CLUB | JUNE

July 8, 2025: Seeking Shelter, A Working Mother, Her Children, and a Story of Homelessness in America – written by Jeff Hobbs. Sandy Hobbs , Jeff’s mother, will lead the discussion for the July meeting. Seeking Shelter is a powerful portrayal of American homelessness. The story follows Evelyn, a single mother of six in Los Angeleswho courageously struggles to keep her family together. Evelyn’s real-life story takes place in the midst of America’s housing crisis. In 2018, poverty and domestic violence cast Evelyn and her children into the urban wilderness of Los Angeles, where she avoids the family crisis network that offers no clear pathway for her children to remain together or attend a decent school. For the next five years, Evelyn works full time as a waitress yet still unable to afford housing or qualify for government aid. All the while she strives to provide stability, education, loving memories, and college aspirations for her children even as they sleep in motels or in her car, living in fear of both her Ex and the country’s child welfare agency. Eventually Evelyn encounters Wendi Gaines, a recently trained social worker who, decades earlier, had survived her own personal hardships and the housing crisis.

Evelyn becomes one of Wendi’s first clients, and the alliance transforms them both.

Told from the perspectives of Evelyn, Wendi, and Evelyn’s teenaged son, Orlando, Seeking Shelter is a powerful and urgent exploration of the issues of homelessness, poverty, and education in America. The story is compelling for anyone interested in understanding not just social inequality and economic disparity in our society but also the power of a mother’s love and vision for her kids. Evelyn’s story creates deeper awareness of impact of housing crisis on homelessness and obstacles faced by such families and individuals. Jeff Hobbs is the New York Times bestselling author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace , which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a finalist for the Pen/Faulkner Award in Biography, was a finalist for the Carnegie Medal in nonfiction, and was made into the 2024 film Rob Peace . He is also the author of Show Them You’re Good and Children of the State . He lives in Los Angeles with his family. On a personal note, Jeff and the Hobbs family are long-time members of WCC, and Jeff was on WCC Swim Team, coached by Fred Freibott. Jeff continues to appreciate the life lessons he learned from Coach Freibott, particularly about effort and perseverance. Jeff lives in Los Angeles with his family, and has recently, been commuting weekly to Yale University to teach “Immersive Journalism.”

AUGUST 5, 2025 The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. A thrilling and tense mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18 century midwife, who refused to accept anything less than justice when women were considered best seen and not heard. Carroll Shannon will lead the discussion for the August meeting. th

GROUNDS | JON URBANSKI, DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSES AND GROUNDS

As we move into the heart of summer, July presents both opportunities and challenges for the care of the golf courses, tennis courts and landscaped areas of the Club. The combination of high temperatures, increased humidity, and regular play presents unique challenges—particularly for cool-season grasses like bentgrass. This month, we will focus our efforts on managing heat stress, optimizing playing conditions, and preparing for daily play. Here's a glimpse of what’s happening behind the scenes to keep the grounds in top shape. Turf Health & Heat Management Long days of sunshine, along with July being the hottest (and most humid) month of the year, puts significant stress on turf for our cool-season grasses, including tall fescue, ryegrass, and bluegrasses we maintain here at Club. Some of the strategies we employ to manage the dog days of summer are: Irrigation Management: We take daily data readings using soil moisture meters and carefully apply water to where it is needed. Pooling or ponding water at this time of year will certainly lead to turf decline or death due to saturated soils or diseases such as pythium. Syringing our fine turf playing surfaces: You have and will notice light misting during the day on greens, tees, and fairways. This is not full-on watering, just a quick spray to cool the turf canopy and reduce heat stress. Mowing and Grooming For the greens on both golf courses, our primary goal is to maintain healthy turf through careful monitoring and proactive practices all year long. July’s elevated temperatures and humidity are synonymous with rapid turf growth due to the plant swelling with moisture. Research has shown for the need to tighten windows of applications to control growth, or we will see a yo-yo effect to measurables such as green speed and firmness. When conditions are excessive, we take defensive measures to combat the environmental factors. We have changed our mower set-up to lighten the load as the traction unit moves across the surface. When conditions are dire, we will suspend mowing for a day and just roll the surfaces to reduce mowing stress and wear. If the heat and humidity persist for an extended period, we may adjust mowing heights as needed to reduce plant stress without significantly affecting playability. In addition, we will suspend all verti-cutting and topdressing of sand for the short-term but increase our use of brushes to smooth surfaces and improve ball roll. Pest & Disease Watch Warm, humid conditions are ideal for turf pests and fungal diseases. Scouting for pests is integral and our staff will closely monitor insect activity, including grubs and cutworms, to act early. At this time of year, our preventative sprays are rotated every 14 days for pathogens associated with dollar spot and brown patch. In some cases, our window may tighten to every seven days for the blight known as pythium which is likely to occur when nighttime temperatures are in the 70s or above.

Course Projects & Repairs Summer is a good time to complete minor projects without disrupting peak play such as tree trimming to allow for airflow and sunlight. These two factors are important for turf health, as well as tree health and human safety. We continue to see the effect of an aging irrigation system. We have averaged over 20 leaks per week since charging up the irrigation system from either glue joints or internal components of the sprinkler failing. When it is not the piping network, we are replacing solenoids at a very rapid pace. A solenoid is an electrical valve that allows the flow of water through a sprinkler. To date, we have replaced over 75 solenoids since April 1 . These fixes do not include the time (labor) needed to address these recurring issues. st Even though there is plenty of time in the calendar year to accomplish many goals, we are beginning to focus on tasks for the coming winter. Summertime is perfect opportunity to account for how much sand we need to replenish for the next playing season, and while we attend to this needed activity, we will also re-edge the bunkers as well. Racquets & Har-Tru Court Maintenance The same climatic conditions we have talked about in this update require consistent maintenance of clay tennis courts to ensure playability now and into the fall season. Key maintenance tasks for this month include: 1.Daily Watering: High temperatures can dry out the court surface quickly. Water early in the morning and late afternoon to maintain proper moisture and court firmness. 2.Inspect, Roll, Brush, and Repair as needed: To keep the surface smooth and compact, rolling several times per week is important, along with brushing and line sweeping to prevent uneven surfaces and keep lines visible. Continually check for low spots or loose material and top-dress with Har-Tru as needed to maintain a level surface. 3.Weed and Algae Control: Increased humidity levels will promote algae and weed growth, especially around edges. Rounding out the month… We appreciate your cooperation with cart traffic stakes and ropes, which help protect vulnerable turf during these hot weeks. The humid weather will make the green surfaces softer this time of year, we ask you to fix your pitch mark, plus one other. Due to the heat, please use mix to fill your divots.

We are committed to providing and keeping the grounds healthy, safe, and beautiful. July’s hard work ensures exceptional playing conditions now—and protects the course for the rest of the season.

JUNIOR TENNIS RECAP The month of June, we focused on a few key areas to help the players build a solid foundation to grow their game. We worked on groundstrokes, reinforcing proper technique with both forehands and backhands. We also emphasized consistency, encouraging players to keep the ball in play to develop stronger rallying skills. Another key focus was direction, learning to aim their shots and place the ball with purpose. Finally, we focused on putting two balls together, meaning being ready for the next shot to start thinking a step ahead.

RACQUETS | LIEZEL HUBER, DIRECTOR OF RACQUETS AND SPORTS

Can you believe we're already halfway through 2025? Time is flying—but let’s not wish it away, especially not summer! It’s my favorite time of the year, and there's no better season to enjoy everything WCC Racquets has to offer. June has been packed with exciting events: Our Summer Ladies Member Guest, “Bling & Swing”, was a sparkling success. We hosted interclub matches against Greenville and took our juniors on the road to Birchwood Racquet Club in Clarks Summit, PA. Daytime Ladies’ Tennis Leagues wrapped up strong, with a few teams earning well-deserved promotions. USTA Summer League is in full swing, with WCC proudly represented across all age divisions. We kicked off our first home swim meet of the season with a win—WCC vs. GCC! The Pickleball Battle of 52 had a fantastic turnout (indoors thanks to the weather), and the energy was contagious! Squash welcomes a new leader—please join me in giving a warm WCC welcome to our new Head Pro, Roman Tkachuk, starting July 7 and the search continues for the right Head Paddle Pro. In the meantime, WCC hit the road for a fantastic Paddle Camp with world-class pro Charlotte Sikora in Stone Harbor—we’re planning another one with her this fall!

Our red and orange ball players spent time on groundstrokes and proper grips, in addition to fun rally games to keep things active and engaging.

Looking ahead to July, we’ll be focusing on volleys, doubles and singles strategy, as well as point play helping players understand positioning, decision-making, and building and finishing points. Our junior players are learning and having fun every step of the way. We are so proud of their progress!

Our Summer Camp is in full swing! Campers recently participated in our exciting “Camp Olympics”, learning about different countries while competing in games. Congrats to Team France on their win! We also hosted a successful Junior Pickleball Championship for ages 8 & under and 10 & under. WCC hosted and also witnessed high-level play during the final rounds of the Brandywine Premier Pickleball Play-Offs. Did you know June is National Pickleball Month? We celebrated with extra clinics and brand-new events all month long. Don't forget to sign up for the US Open Day Trip on Thursday, August 28! GROUP EXERCISE SCHEDULE

Fitness Book Club WCC Fitness is excited to announce the next selection for our book club. We will be reading David Goggins “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds”. David Goggins has an inspiring and amazing story, and “through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes.” Although this is a “Book Club” you may want to listen to the book on tape instead of, or in addition to reading the book. It has interviews with Goggins in between chapters, which may offer a little more authentic insight from David Goggins himself. You have the month of July to read and/or listen to this selection and then we will be meeting Wednesday, August 13th at 6:00pm in the Paddle Hut to discuss. If you would like to participate in the discussion please register at Mind Body or email Michelle Kasker (mkasker@wilmingtoncc.com). If you cannot attend the discussion in August, not to worry, there will be another book selection in October - discussion in November. This book club is open to all members, whatever your fitness level is!
