JUNIOR TENNIS RECAP The month of June, we focused on a few key areas to help the players build a solid foundation to grow their game. We worked on groundstrokes, reinforcing proper technique with both forehands and backhands. We also emphasized consistency, encouraging players to keep the ball in play to develop stronger rallying skills. Another key focus was direction, learning to aim their shots and place the ball with purpose. Finally, we focused on putting two balls together, meaning being ready for the next shot to start thinking a step ahead.
RACQUETS | LIEZEL HUBER, DIRECTOR OF RACQUETS AND SPORTS
Can you believe we're already halfway through 2025? Time is flying—but let’s not wish it away, especially not summer! It’s my favorite time of the year, and there's no better season to enjoy everything WCC Racquets has to offer. June has been packed with exciting events: Our Summer Ladies Member Guest, “Bling & Swing”, was a sparkling success. We hosted interclub matches against Greenville and took our juniors on the road to Birchwood Racquet Club in Clarks Summit, PA. Daytime Ladies’ Tennis Leagues wrapped up strong, with a few teams earning well-deserved promotions. USTA Summer League is in full swing, with WCC proudly represented across all age divisions. We kicked off our first home swim meet of the season with a win—WCC vs. GCC! The Pickleball Battle of 52 had a fantastic turnout (indoors thanks to the weather), and the energy was contagious! Squash welcomes a new leader—please join me in giving a warm WCC welcome to our new Head Pro, Roman Tkachuk, starting July 7 and the search continues for the right Head Paddle Pro. In the meantime, WCC hit the road for a fantastic Paddle Camp with world-class pro Charlotte Sikora in Stone Harbor—we’re planning another one with her this fall!
Our red and orange ball players spent time on groundstrokes and proper grips, in addition to fun rally games to keep things active and engaging.
Looking ahead to July, we’ll be focusing on volleys, doubles and singles strategy, as well as point play helping players understand positioning, decision-making, and building and finishing points. Our junior players are learning and having fun every step of the way. We are so proud of their progress!
PICKLEBALL RECAP
Congratulations to everyone that played in the Brandywine Premiere Pickleball League, and all members competing in the Wilmington Interclub League. Looking ahead, the 4.0+ Round Robin returns on Tuesday, July 2nd at 6 pm, and we’re excited to get that competitive energy back. Ladies Night Out every Thursday at 5:30pm. If you haven’t joined yet, come check it out. Our Junior Social Club continues Tuesdays and Thursdays, and it’s been awesome seeing so many young players out on the courts.
The Fitness Center has never been busier! Everyone is loving our newest trainer, Jimmy Pavlovsky from Novacare. Whether you're recovering from an injury or want to prevent one, Jimmy's your guy.
Our Summer Camp is in full swing! Campers recently participated in our exciting “Camp Olympics”, learning about different countries while competing in games. Congrats to Team France on their win! We also hosted a successful Junior Pickleball Championship for ages 8 & under and 10 & under. WCC hosted and also witnessed high-level play during the final rounds of the Brandywine Premier Pickleball Play-Offs. Did you know June is National Pickleball Month? We celebrated with extra clinics and brand-new events all month long. Don't forget to sign up for the US Open Day Trip on Thursday, August 28! It's a can't-miss opportunity to experience the excitement of the world’s biggest tennis tournament. Space is limited—first come, first served—so act fast! Bocce Socials happen every Wednesday at 5:30pm. Come join us for some midweek fun! Our annual Parent/Child Racquets Social is on July 4th, starting with Family Tennis & Pickle Round Robin at 10:30am. And of course, there’s no better place to cool off than the pool! The kids are having a blast, and parents, don’t forget to try the poolside café’s Frozen Rosé, Margaritas, and Piña Coladas. I’ll see you there! Finally, a huge shoutout to my incredible team and the entire WCC family—you make every day here special.
