Message from the Mayor by Mayor Josh Morgan mayor@london.ca 519-661-4920
If you haven’t had a chance, I strongly encourage you to dis- cover this wonderful one-of-a-kind experience this summer! Oakridge Optimist Pool and Park One of London’s few outdoor pools, the Oakridge Optimist Pool and Park is an excellent way to cool off this summer. There are daily free swims and many programs available. Check out Play Your Way for further information. Along with the toddler-friendly splashpad and playground, the park is a great summer family place. With the background noises of a crack of a baseball bat or smash of a tennis racquet, there is no better place to spend a summer afternoon. I am happy to be sponsoring a free swim on Canada Day from 1:30 pm to 4 pm. I look forward to seeing you there! – Our London Knights are Memorial Cup champions! Con- gratulations to the team, the staff, and the fans. The best part? Seeing Londoners united and celebrating together at Dundas Place. What a perfect way to kick off a summer of events. Contact me at: mayor@london.ca with your comments or questions, or follow along on your favourite social media platform. We’ll see you out there, London! – Our historic investment into policing, with a focus on modernization of technology and approach is already delivering positive results. Response times are trending down, service complaints are down, and London’s crime severity index is down 14 percent — more than any other Canadian city. As part of our comprehensive, evidence- based approach to drug prevention, accessible safe sites and care, Middlesex-London Health Unit announced that opioid deaths are down 40% in the past year. While the work is far from finished, London is leading the way in Ontario and becoming a model for other communities to address these concerns. – Our response to London’s housing crisis continues to build momentum. In June we’ve already announced diverse new downtown developments ranging from office-to-residential conversions at market rate to the preservation of century-old heritage sites, converted into affordable and wrap-around supportive housing.
As we head into another beautiful London summer, I hope all of you enjoy the bright mornings, warm evenings, and the incredible events and festivals happening everywhere you look in our city. The fields are full, trails are open, and neighbourhood gardens are bustling with activity. The same goes for Council Chambers, where we’re continuing to make strides for Londoners: – After months of engagement and negotiations with our partners at the provincial level, we received a letter from the Ontario Government confirming that London is not responsible for backfilling development charge exemptions—exemptions mandated by the province— freeing up millions in city budget savings. What does this mean for you? Property taxes will be lowered, with our target of bringing any increase under 5% well in sight. We won’t stop there. I have asked city staff, agencies, boards and commissions to continue examining where we can bring further savings while maintaining the programs and amazing progress we are making in all sectors.

Sifton Bog is a Hidden Gem Looking to discover London this summer? Why not start with our own Sifton Bog located off Oxford Street just west of Hyde Park Road? This provincially recog- nized ecological significant area by Steve Lehman, Ward 8 London City Councillor, slehman@london.ca
is one of Canada’s southerly bogs offering a distinctive hiking experience that just got better with a new north/south hiking path snaking through woodlands connecting the trail at the south end with the fabulous boardwalk at the north. The trail system offers three kilometres of hiking, multi-use paths and accessible boardwalks through marsh, swamp, treed and open bog leading to Redmond’s Pond. This contrast provides hikers with a glimpse into two distinct ecosystems within a short distance. Throughout the hike, visitors can observe a variety of plant species, including Sphagnum mosses, Leatherleaf, Small Cranberry, Black Huckleberry, Highbush Blueberry, Pitcher Plant, and Round-leaved Sundew. The area is also home to diverse wildlife and offers incredible birdwatching for such species as warblers, sparrows, and finches.

Foot Care is Health Care “My journey into foot care began during my time working in the hospital, community health and long-term care settings,” explains Jocelyn Interiano, clinic owner, RPN, Foot Care Nurse and Nurse Educator at Forest City Foot Care. “I often saw patients struggle with mobility issues, infections, and foot pain that could have been prevented with proper attention. These issues weren’t just about discomfort — they affected people’s ability to walk, exercise, manage chronic diseases like diabetes, and even their mental well-being. I saw a clear gap in care and knew I could make a tangible difference by focusing on this area. After completing advanced foot care training, I began offering services that not only treat immediate concerns but also emphasize prevention and education.” “ Our feet carry us through every day, yet they’re often the last part of the body we think to care for — until there’s a problem,” she continues. “Regular foot care is crucial for preventing complications such as infections, ingrown toenails, corns, and calluses. For people with diabetes or poor circulation, even a small wound can escalate quickly into something serious, potentially leading to hospitalization or amputation. By maintaining proper foot hygiene, monitoring skin integrity, and addressing issues early, we can significantly reduce health risks and improve overall well-being. Moreover, foot care plays a major role in maintaining mobility and independence, especially in older adults. Healthy feet support healthy movement — and staying active is key to physical and mental health.” Forest City Foot Care provides a range of services tailored to individual needs. The most frequently requested include toenail trimming and thinning – especially for those with thickened

Summer Car Tips Summertime is finally here and so is the perfect time for road trips! While making your checklist of things to do before you hit the road, there are several simple precautions we can take to keep your family safe while travelling. When bringing your vehicle in for an inspection we can check your brakes, suspension, engine oil, fluid levels, tire pressures, tire life, lights, cabin filters, air filters, belts, and windshield wipers. These are all crucial to check before a long trip. Upon request, our highly trained technicians will ensure your air conditioning and your battery are in good working condition and have not been affected by the change in temperatures. We recommend advanced planning in case any mechanical work is required before your trip. With the price of a new vehicle, we are all trying hard to maintain ours and keep them on the road as long as possible. Older vehicles do require our attention every once and a while. Unfortunately, our vehicles cannot tell us when they need some love, so we must pay extra attention to the signs they show us ! Call or email us today so we can help you and your family enjoy a stress-free summer!

House of Victor – Local Salon Surviving and Thriving “Business has slowly thrived in our new location,” said House of Victor owner, Jane Deshaw, “so I guess we’re survivors. I’m not sure I would do all that again but I’m glad we made it!” Jane went on to explain that the hair salon, now located at Cherryhill Village Mall (301 Oxford Street East, Unit 40): – Survived the pandemic by sheer determination and prayer – Survived the move from one mall (London Mall at Oxford and Wonderland) to another, three months after the last COVID shutdown – Survived City Hall on a wing and a prayer – Survived a nightmare contractor – My fellow workers survived me.... lol not sure how but they put up with me – Survived numerous setbacks with next to zero money... heart in my throat... panic attacks almost daily. The Banting Beat For the third consecutive year, Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School has won the provincial boys’ overall track and field title at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet held at York University, June 5 to 7. Banting head coach Todd MacKay says it takes a lot of commitment from the entire team to win. “At the culmination of a weather- challenged season, the Banting Bronco track and field team competed in the annual OFSAA Track & Field Championships. The Championship gathers the best high school competitors from across the province. Banting’s team comprised 15 athletes across all track and field events, including a 4x100m and 4x400m relay. At the culmination of the meet, Banting “ran away” with the Overall Boys title, their third OFSAA title in three years.” Congratulations to the Banting medal performers: Jackson Mackay

What’s Happening at Sherwood Branch Library by Dayna Peebles
As we reimagine Sherwood together, we truly appreciate your patience and understanding. We know how much you’ve missed the Library. For so many in our community, visiting Sherwood is a part of your daily routine: reading the newspaper, picking up a new book, or just unwinding in a quiet corner. Sherwood has always been a place to connect, and it will be again very soon – better than ever! In 2023 alone, Sherwood welcomed over 140,000 visits. Behind each one is a person who relies on the Library as a safe, inspiring and welcoming place. As the neighbourhood grows, so does the need for a Library that reflects and supports it. That’s why we embarked on this renovation, to build a space that meets your needs now and into the future. This fall, we’ll reopen with an interactive children’s area, more seating, laptop tables, expanded study and meeting areas, brighter spaces and a welcoming new entrance. The heart of our Library has always been you, the people who use it. This renovation is for you, and we can’t wait to welcome you back to a space that feels like home. Get ready to start a brand-new chapter with us at Sherwood! Stay informed on Sherwood’s reopening date at: www.lpl.ca/sherwood-renovation

Another Successful Fundraiser for Rotary Club of London-Hyde Park by Barbara Robins Our sold-out Friday, May 2, 2025, Rotary Chilean Wine & Food Pairing proved to be the most successful yet in our nine years of holding this event at the beautiful West Haven Golf & Country Club. Preliminary financials suggest that we are on track to net just under $23,000 from our sponsorships, silent and live auctions, our raffle, plus gifts-in-kind. Congratulations to our 2025 Savour the Flavour raffle winner Lisa Lendzian of Middlesex Centre. She is the lucky winner of a six-course tasting dinner for eight, complete with paired wines, chef and staff, hosted at her home. A special thank you goes out to all the folks who supported us through their attendance, sponsorships, donations to our auctions, or by purchasing raffle tickets, as well as to West Haven for their excellent food and service and to Ed Holder for serving as our guest auctioneer. The revenue earned from this fundraiser will allow our small Rotary club to have the funds to continue to do good both in the local and international communities in the 2025-26 Rotary year.

Jazz by the Bog by Susan Smythe There was excitement in the air as patrons began to filter into the Narthex of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church for a musical trip to Tijuana, Mexico, eagerly awaiting the opening of the sanctuary doors to find the optimum seat for our third concert of this season’s JAZZ BY THE BOG concert series. Tijuana 2 Night! was the musical group engaged to fly us back to the 1960s when Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass emerged as a prominent musical group, led by the renowned trumpet player, composer, businessman, and bandleader, Herb Alpert. They appeared several times on the Ed Sullivan show and toured until 1969. London’s version of this group of exceptional musicians in their own right is very familiar to our audiences; however, we hadn’t heard this particular collaboration before in our series and they did not disappoint! From the first strains of Spanish Flea right through the evening to the swinging but crisp notes of the last tune of the night – Whipped Cream – the group delivered. Paul Stevenson’s brilliance with both trumpet and flugelhorn shone through all evening on tunes such as Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom Time , Chuck Mangione’s Feels So Good , and a duet on Lemon Tree , with Barry Usher on saxophone, which blended nicely as the “other” horn. Percussionist Rob LaRose, ever the comic relief when called upon, helped Barry with Lemon Tree … by adding bongos (okay) and kazoo!!! The audience loved it. Nevin Campbell provided wonderful keyboard accompaniment, making use of the versatility of the electronic instrument as a marimba in a few numbers. Emcee for the evening was bassist Darryl Stacey who heads up this group. Darryl is not only one of the area’s finest bass players but also has a great voice for speaking and singing, as proved on a few numbers, most notably, Herb’s hit single, This Guy’s in Love With You . The evening flew by quickly as we all recounted when or where we were in our youth when many of the very familiar Tijuana Brass hits were played for the first time. The audience was kept amused, not only when a member was invited to participate onstage for Acapulco 1922 as the very important car horn tooter,
but also by the clever banter of the musicians themselves, who set the tone for a lively and fun evening. Thank you to the band for providing a great end to the 21st season, and to our loyal patrons who return to support this fundraiser for the work of St. Aidan’s church. We look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall, as our 22nd season takes off on Friday, October 24, 2025, with Jazz Ten, a contemporary Big Band. We follow that up on Friday, January 30, 2026, with Rachelle Courtney and Nevin Campbell for some warmth and comfort, and we wrap up another year on Friday, April 24, 2026, with Remembering Burt Bacharach featuring Take 3 & Company.
