Crossing Guards Get Special Visit Mayor Colin Grantham paid a special visit to crossing guards in Strathroy-Caradoc during School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, which took place from June 2 to June 6, 2025. According to the Ontario Traffic Council (OTC), “The honorary week-long event is dedicated to recognizing and honouring the essential contributions of School Crossing Guards in our com- munities. This initiative goes beyond a simple ‘thank you’ and strives to create a heightened awareness of these unsung he- roes’ critical role in promoting safe and active travel to school.” Many communities have moved away from physical crossing guards because of the cost and difficulty finding people to fill the role. “In Strathroy-Caradoc, we’ve committed to maintain cross - ing guards for as long as we can find folks willing to do it,” says Mayor Grantham. Crossing guards play a crucial role in the Strathroy-Caradoc area. “Strathroy and Mount Brydges are growing, which means more traffic and increased risk for our children walking to and from school,” says Colin. To help celebrate these unsung heroes, the Mayor invited all crossing guards to a staff lunch at Town Hall and took the time to visit the two Mount Brydges guards while they were on duty. Because crossing guards play an essential role in helping chil- dren safely cross busy streets, it requires someone who shares the Municipality’s values of teamwork, respect, honesty, and commitment. Individuals who take on this critical responsibility are typically the kind of people who go the extra mile to serve their community, especially its younger members. The primary responsibility of a Crossing Guard is to ensure the safe movement of students who are on their way to and from school, assisting them when crossing public roadways and in- tersections. It takes a keen eye and the ability to stay present to watch for gaps in the traffic and lead the students across the roadway or intersection. Anyone interested in becoming a School Safety Guard can contact the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc to inquire about applying. Photos courtesy of the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc
