Fourth and Final Article in an Exposé of This False Cult by E. B. Jones

I N Matthew 7:15-20 is one of the most solemn warnings uttered by our Lord Jesus Christ: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fru it; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. “ Anything wrong with Seventh-day Adventism?” I answer: “ Its unsavory fruits.” Look with me at a few of these evil products1. Seventh-day Adventism is a system which has resulted in the degradation of its people because they are not encour aged to think for themselves. The few who think for them are like the Roman popery in their usurpation of authority. Mrs. E. G. White’s writings are con sidered necessary to any correct inter pretation of the Word of God. They are a denomination of fault-find ers, parading each others’ faults. They are taught that all other churches are apostate and corrupt, and, contrary to First Corinthians 13:6, they rejoice in reporting iniquity. The fruit of this busi ness is a hard, unlovely spirit. Their ministers are lecturers, going from place to place, repeating over and over their doctrinal, argumentative dis courses. Such men become combative, rather than tender, as true shepherds should be. ■ Their churches are generally small. Their meetings, being held on Saturday, are attended chiefly by themselves, and are dull, especially to youth. They rarely work with other Chris tians in anything. They condemn all Christians who do not follow them. The fruit is narrow bigotry and dry rot in their own souls. They lack influence over the ungodly in any community. Other churches, by having sermons and Bible schools on Sundays, exert a mighty influence for God. They have little influence for good on society. They take slight interest in worthy community projects. Like other heretical and fanatical sects, they are clannish. The moment a person becomes a real Seventh-day Adventist, he is spoiled for further usefulness in society. Of Seventh-day Adventists it may F E B R U A R Y , 1948

truly be said: they “ compass sea and land to make one proselyte.” They are not in terested in the conversion of sinners, but in the conversion’ of saints. They count all lost who reject their “message.” Their mission workers on foreign fields are the dread of all other missionaries. Many of the children of Adventists, when grown, keep neither Saturday nor Sunday. Adventists, both by argument and ex ample, encourage Sunday desecration. They engage in disturbing activities on the Lord’s Dajr. A community in which they live has no quiet day at all. They join forces with the worst elements in seeking to destroy all legal protection for the Lord’s Day. In communities where they have been the longest, they have the most meager results. The great burden of Adventists is about speculative theories—soul-sleeping, the annihilation of the wicked, the sanc tuary in heaven, the time when Jesus will come, the image o f the beast, the mark of the/beast, the Sabbath! Seventh-day Adventism is “ another gospel,” which the apostles never preached. We find in the New Testament, “ preach the gospel” fifty times; “ preach Christ” twenty-three times; “ preach the Word” seventeen times; “ preach the kingdom” eight times; but—“ preach the law” or “ preach the Sabbath” not once! Comparatively few converts are re ported in their year books. These come, almost entirely, from their own families and from other churches. The soul-sav ing power o f God has never attended Seventh-day Adventist work. By their arguments, they confuse the minds of manv. sowing prejudice against all other churches, insomuch that multi tudes drift away from everything rel:- gious. Adventists say that almost all who leave them become infidels. This is true. Infidelity is a fruit of Seventh-day Ad ventism. Witness the large number of physicians, teachers, and ministers who. having left Adventism, are today pro fessed infidels. “ The ripe fruit of Ad ventism in years to come will be a gen eration of doubters.” 2 “ By their fruits ye shall know them.” “ Anything wrong with Seventh-day Adventism ?” “ Speaking the truth in love,” I an swer: “ Its unstable foundation! Its un- scriptural faith ! Its unscrupulous frauds! Its unsavory fru its!” 1 D. M. Canright, in Seventh-day Ad ventism Renounced, Chapter V, notices these and other unsavory fruits. 2D. M. Canright: Seventh-day Ad ventism Renounced; p. 65.
