2 - YU Libraries 2025 Annual Report

Artificial intelligence did not w rite this introduction , but it did quite eloquentl y suggest that “ our libraries stand at a fascinating crossroads of tradition and inno v ation .” From the Director’s Desk As I complete m y first y ear as Director of Uni v ersit y Libraries at Yeshi v a Uni v ersit y , I ' v e w itnessed ho w these dual forces shape our communit y ' s pursuit of kno w ledge — ancient w isdom and cutting - edge technolog y engaged in producti v e dialogue rather than opposition . The emergence of generati v e AI tools has not diminished our mission , but it has enriched it — opening ne w path w a y s for research , scholarship , and creati v it y , w hile also challenging us to deepen the critical thinking skills w e foster across all disciplines . Our role as a librar y , as a cornerstone of academic life , is to support e v er y member of our communit y in na v igating this e v ol v ing landscape w ith thoughtfulness and integrit y . Just as our scholars ha v e al w a y s e x amined te x ts w ith precision and care , w e no w ha v e the opportunit y — and responsibilit y — to help students , facult y , and researchers approach algorithms , generati v e AI , and data w ith the same sense of purpose . That means guiding them to w ard thoughtful , nuanced use of these po w erful tools , so that the y see them not as shortcuts but as instruments of e x ploration and learning . It also means creating an en v ironment w here digital literac y , ethical inquir y , and intellectual honest y are not afterthoughts , but central to e v er y stage of the research and creati v e process . The librar y remains steadfast in its commitment to student success and scholarl y inno v ation , and w e w ill continue to ensure that e v er y one w e ser v e is equipped to na v igate the future of kno w ledge w ith skill , confidence , and integrit y . At the w orld ' s flagship Je w ish Uni v ersit y , our collections continue to e v ol v e , supporting ne w academic programs w hile remaining deepl y rooted in our core v alues . We embrace technological ad v ancement not merel y for its o w n sake , but as another means to fulfill our uni v ersit y ’ s mission : to educate , empo w er , and inspire the ne x t generation of leaders w ho w ill make the w orld better for themsel v es and future generations .

Herman Prins Salomon Fellowship

The 2024–2025 academic year marked the launch of the inaugural Herman Prins Salomon Fellowship. Established through th e generosity of Professor Herman Prins Salomon z”l, the Fellowship welcomed its first fellow, Professor Carsten Wilke, to Yeshiva University Libraries. During his residency, Professor Wilke conducted research using materials donated by Prof. Salomon and the Mendel Gottesman Library collection, engaged with graduate students, and delivered a public lecture entitled “Sephardic Clandestine Writing of the Early Enlightenment.” In his lecture, Carsten Wilke discussed Manuscript 1374, Dizertasiones by Abraham Gómez Silveira, dated 1699, which is on loan to Yeshiva University by Richard and Debra Parkoff.

This inaugural year of the Fellowship also featured the Herman Prins Salomon Memorial Lecture, delivered by Professor Claude Stuczynski, who addressed the Yeshiva University community and broader public with a keynote titled “Herman Prins Salomon (1930–2021) and His Portuguese Love Story.” A photograph of Professor Stuczynski during his lecture is included on this page.

Both events were hosted by the Mendel Gottesman Library and co-sponsored by the Bernard Revel Graduate School and the Rabbi Arthur Schneier Program for International Affairs.

Library Resarch Award

This year, a team of seven librarians—Wendy Kosakoff, Emily Apterbach, Stephanie Gross, Nanette Johnson, Rina Krautwirth, Sandy Moore, and Tina Weiss—evaluated 27 submissions for the annual Library Research Awards. These awards recognize outstanding student research that demonstrates excellence in the use of library resources and services. In addition to general submissions, the libraries also offer a dedicated Library Research Award for Honors Theses and Senior Projects, open to students in the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein Honors Program at Yeshiva College and the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Stern College for Women.

Our 2025 winner, Aden Lyons YC ’26, is a double major in history and political science. His paper, “The Jewish Community of Lida During the Second World War,” was written for Professor Joshua Zimmerman’s course “History of the Holocaust.” Aden’s paper prioritized firsthand accounts in a way that allowed him to recount the horrors and acts of heroism Lida’s Jews faced, which in turn impacts the reader on an emotional level.

ILAN BOCIAN YESHIVA COLLEGE
