Modernizing Library Services: YU Libraries' Successful Transition to FOLIO After 25 y ears w ith our pre v ious s y stem , Yeshi v a Uni v ersit y Libraries achie v ed a major technological milestone in the Summer of 2024 b y successfull y implementing FOLIO , a cutting - edge Librar y Ser v ices Platform . This comprehensi v e moderni z ation project represents one of the most significant infrastructure impro v ements in our libraries ' recent histor y .
A Collaborative Achievement
Working alongside the Benjamin N . Cardo z o School of La w Librar y , w e joined an elite group of research institutions using FOLIO , including Columbia Uni v ersit y , Cornell Uni v ersit y , Michigan State Uni v ersit y , and the Librar y of Congress . This collaboration not onl y moderni z ed our s y stems but also deli v ered substantial cost sa v ings to the uni v ersit y b y consolidating our technolog y platforms . Overcoming Complex Challenges The transition required e x traordinar y team w ork and dedication from our staff . Our cataloging team , led b y Rebecca Malamud , undertook the massi v e task of cleaning and preparing o v er t w o decades of catalog records for migration . While maintaining dail y operations , our catalogers w orked alongside student w orkers and staff from multiple departments to ensure data integrit y throughout the process . The project presented unique challenges , particularl y in handling our e x tensi v e Hebraica and Judaica collections . Our team w orked directl y w ith FOLIO de v elopers to establish proper specifications for Hebre w materials , sharing e x pertise that benefited the entire FOLIO communit y . Enhanced User Experience The ne w s y stem deli v ers significant impro v ements for our communit y . YUFIND , po w ered b y EBSCO Disco v er y Ser v ice , no w ser v es as a comprehensi v e search engine pro v iding seamless access to books , e - books , journal articles , and other resources across all de v ices . Our traditional YULIS catalog maintains its user - friendl y interface for bro w sing ph y sical collections , w hile ne w anal y tical tools pro v ide deeper insights into librar y usage and collection de v elopment . Recognition and Future Impact The e x pertise gained during this transition has positioned YU Libraries as leaders in librar y technolog y inno v ation . Our Head of Librar y Technolog y , Hao Zeng , and Cardo z o ' s Head of Librar y S y stems , Richard Kim , shared our e x periences at the EBSCO User Group Conference in Pro v idence , Rhode Island . This technological transformation streamlines our w orkflo w s , centrali z es operations across our four libraries , and positions us for continued inno v ation in ser v ing our academic communit y ' s research and learning needs .
