Volleyball Champions
The 51st Annual AHSAA State Volleyball Tournament was held on October 26-28, 2021 at the Birmingham Crossplex. The following results are from the state championship matches. CLASS 1A Donoho Sweept Bayshore Christian 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 to win the 2021 Class 1A volleyball championship. Donoho (55-9), coached by Jamie Clendenin, has now won two of the last three 1A championships, taking home the Blue Trophy in 2019, finishing as runner-up last year and winning the 2021 title. Tournament MVP Lilly Grace Draper delivered 12 kills and 14 digs in today’s championship victory, and Sam Wakefield had 29 assists and 17 digs. Maggie Wakefield added eight kills and 11 digs, Naira Rehman had 18 digs. Ashlyn Whiteside led Bayshore (24-25) with 12 kills and 16 digs. Ella Crooms added five kills, while Molly Brown and Molly Parker had four kills apiece. Brooke Kearney dished out 26 assists. CLASS 1A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Lily Grace Draper, Donoho (MVP); Maggie Wakefield, Donoho; Sam Wakefield, Donoho; Estella Connell, Donoho; Ashlyn Whiteside, Bayshore; and Brooke Raimo, Bayshore. CLASS 2A Addison High School’s Lady Bulldogs posted a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 victory over defending Orange Beach to claim the Class 2A State Volleyball Crown and the school’s 13th state title. The Bulldogs (48-6) of Coach Kaydi Woodard were paced by senior Addisyn Smothers, who delivered 20 kills and added eight digs to earn MVP honors for the second year in a row. Dacey Baker had seven kills, setter Gracie Manley had out 34 assists and Hadley Butler had 12 digs. Orange Beach (30-17), coached Jackie Arnold, was led by Hannah Marsh, who had 11 kills and nine digs, Ensley Keel with 25 assists and eight digs, Amelia Edgeworth with six kills and eight digs. She also had two service aces. CLASS 2A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Addisyn Smothers, Addison (MVP); Gracie Manley, Addison; Dacey Baker, Addison; Ensley Keel, Orange Beach; Amelia Edgeworth, Orange Beach; Hannah Marsh, Orange Beach. CLASS 3A Trinity Presbyterian Defeated Montgomery Catholic 3-0 to win its second straight Class 3A state volleyball title. The Wildcats (47-7), coached by Sarah Dubberly, posted a 28-26, 17-25, 25-10, 25-22 win to claim the school’s third state championship overall. Catholic (39-8), coached by Dubberly’s husband Sellers Dubberly, played in its first volleyball state final. Junior setter Addison Cherry earned Class 3A state tourney MVP for the second year in a row with her floor leadership highlighted by 42 assists, nine digs and four kills. Emma Moody and Emma Kate Smith had 13 kills each and Reese Patterson had nine. Isabelle Hill also had nine digs. Catholic’s strong hitters Lennon McAnnally and Allyse Rudolph had 14 and 12 kills, respectively, and Julienne Pharrams had eight. McAnnally also had eight digs, Rudolph had even and Mally Barranco had 11. Maria Schwarz had 17 assists and Audrey Trant totaled 15. CLASS 3A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Addison Cherry, Trinity (MVP); Emma Moody, Trinity; Emma Kate Smith, Trinity; Lennon McNally, Montgomery Catholic; Allyse Rudolph, Montgomery Catholic; Julienne Pharrams, Montgomery Catholic. CLASS 4A Westminster Christian’s Meg Paparella had 22 kills, including the championship-clinching spike, to help the Wildcats defeat defending champ Montgomery Academy in the AHSAA Class 4A volleyball championship. The
Wildcats (41-8), coached by Holly Richards, earned the school’s first state volleyball championship while also denying Montgomery Academy from winning a fourth straight state title. Montgomery Academy (27-16), coached by AHSAA Hall of Famer Julie Gordon, got 18 kills from Elle McBride, 16 kills from Virginia Meacham and 13 kills from Caroline McDaniel. Addi Vinson dished out 54 assists and added 11 digs. CLASS 4AALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Meg Paparella, Westminster (MVP); Brianna Tinsley, Westminster; Calli Tanielu, Westminster; Addi Vinson, MontgomeryAcademy; Virginia Beacham, Montgomery Academy; Elle McBride, Montgomery Academy. CLASS 5A Bayside Academy claimed its 20th consecutive state volleyball crown with a 3-0 win over East Limestone. The Lady Admirals rolled past East Limestone 25-13, 25-13, 25-9. The Admirals have now won state crowns in five classifications (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A 5A). Leading Bayside (57-6) was Class 5A tourney MVP Blakeley Robbins. The sophomore setter had 33 assists and eight digs in the win. Caroline Chastang had 11 kills and eight digs, Ella Broadhead added 10 kills and two service aces, and Lucy Wilkinson contributed 24 digs and six assists. East Limestone (46-8), coached by Nicole Eslick, were playing in the state finals for the school’s first time. Riley Carwile and Bryanna Johnson each had seven kills and Bailey Baker had 16 assists. Johnson also had 11 digs and Amy Rice had nine. CLASS 5A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Blakeley Robbins, Bayside Academy (MVP); Ella Broadhead, Bayside Academy; Lucy Wilkinson, Bayside Academy; Caroline Chastang, Bayside Academy; Riley Carwile, East Limestone; Bryanna Johnson, East Limestone. CLASS 6A Mountain Brook defeated St. Paul’s Episcopal 25-17. 27-25. 25-19 to claim the school’s second straight Class 6A state title. The Spartans (43-12), coached by Mattie Gardner, was led by tourney MVP Greer Golden, who had a match-high 13 kills in the win. Lucy Redden added seven kills and three digs, and Hannah Parant totaled 27 assists. St. Paul’s (45-10), coached by Lisa Marston, was paced by Rachel Bell. She had nine kills and seven digs. Hannah Pearce added seven kills and Peyton Hass had 19 assists and nine digs. CLASS 6A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Greer Golden, Mountain Brook (MVP); Hannah Parant, Mountain Brook; Lucy Redden, Mountain Brook; Peyton Hass, St. Paul’s; Hannah Pearce, St. Paul’s; and Rachel Bell, St. Paul’s. CLASS 7A Senior Audrey Rothman landed 24 kills to help lead Spain Park High School to a hard-fought 26-24, 25-23, 24-23 sweep over McGill-Toolen Catholic in the AHSAA Class 7A State Title Game. Rothman, who is planning to continue her career at Florida State next season, earned MVP honors and added 12 digs in the win. Teammate Emily Breazeale added 12 kills and seven digs. Brooklyn Allison had 14 digs, seven assists and two service aces in the win. Leading McGill-Toolen was Chelsea Daffin with 13 kills. Anna Grace Sparks had 12 kills and Emma Moore had nine kills. Setter Mamie Fromdahl had 37 assists, Alexa Cole totaled 16 digs and Gracie Calagaz added 10 digs. CLASS 7A ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Audrey Rothman, Spain Park (MVP); Lilly Johnson, Spain Park; Emily Breazeale, Spain Park; Brooklyn Allison, Spain Park; Anna Grace Sparks, McGill-Toolen; and Chelsea Daffin, McGill-Toolen.
Plainview Falls At State The Plainview High School volleyball team fell to Montgomery Catholic in the 2021 Class 3A State Semifinals. In the game, Saydi Jackson had six kills and six digs, Jocelyn Hatfield added 14 digs and four kills, and Ali Price had 16 assists and five digs. Abby McGee added 21 digs for the Bears. Plainview (50-17), coached by Kaci Kirk, reached the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Hale County in the opening round of the state tournament. Box 498 Coach McWhorter Honored JonathanMcWhorter was recently honored for his dedication and service to the Cedar Bluff High School football program. McWhorter served as the Cedar Bluff head football coach for 15 years (2006-2020). As the Tigers coach he compiled a winning record with 121 wins and 58 losses. He guided Cedar Bluff to five Class 1A Region titles and two 13 win seasons. In 2006 and 2015, the Tigers competed in the state championship games and were the state runner-ups each year. Fyffe Finishes Season In State Semifinals The Fyffe High School volleyball season came to an end in the state semifinals. The Red Devils fell to eventual Class 3A State Champion Trinity Presbyterian 3-0. To reach the state semifinals, Fyffe defeated Hale County 3-0 in the opening round of the state tournament.
