Each year on November 11 Americans celebrate Veteran's Day, which is a day designed to pay respect to all those who have served and to all who have bravely fought for our great nation. The idea was first proposed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 when he proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, which is a term used inWorldWar I when a cease fire occurred between theAllied nations and Germany. This cease fire went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and this is the reason that November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars," and this is one of the reasons the United States began recognizing the November 11 date as what is now known as Veteran's Day. President Wilson reportedly said that "To us inAmerica, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has givenAmerica to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…" Armistice Day became a legal holiday on May 13, 1938 to honor those who served in World War I. However, following World War II and other Military conflicts, the 83rd US Congress amended the 1938 act to officially change "Armistice Day" to "Veteran's Day" to include all who served, not just those in WWI. This was done on June 1, 1954 and in October United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official Veteran's Day Proclamation. In 1968 the government established the Uniform Holiday Bill, which changed Veteran's Day to a three day weekend for federal employees celebrating the national holiday. However, after much confusion, and disappointment by some veterans, President Gerald Ford signed a Public Law on September 20, 1975 to return the holiday to November 11 starting in 1978, regardless of what day of the week November 11 falls one. The holiday is still celebrated on November 11 of each year. Many towns and communities across the country, as well as around Northeast Alabama, have built various parks and memorials designed to honor our Veterans. These areas are not just a place to visit on November 11, but most of them are open everyday throughout the year. The pictures shown with the article are a couple of Veteran Parks in DeKalb County that have been built in honor of all those who have served, as well as a few photos of US Veterans.
