A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

I would like to start by congratulating all Year 13 students for successfully completing their UCAS applications. The vast majority of the students are planning to go to university in the Autumn and their applications have now been successfully submitted. The students who are opting for alternative pathways can arrange to see me if they need further support for their post-18 plans. Students now need to focus on their studies and the upcoming mock exams that are taking place when we come back from the half term break. Congratulations to Lily O for representing the school at the Richmond Borough Cross Country event last Friday. On Wednesday, our Spanish students went to the Cervantes Theatre to see The House of Bernarda Alba. On their return, they all mentioned what an incredible performance it was, as well as how much the book they have been studying was brought to life. Also on Wednesday, our Sixth form football team took part in a futsal tournament, so they took part in a few games. Our team won three, but unfortunately they lost two, which led to them finishing fourth overall. A huge well done to them for playing and doing their best in all these games after a long day at school. Next week on Monday, as part of their A Level in Drama, Year 13 students will take part in a Monologue specialist visit, which I am certain they will find really beneficial. The Drama Department have hired a specialist director/actor to work with the students on an one-to-one basis. Also on Monday, after school, Year 13 students have been invited to attend a talk from Manvir Ubhi about his career in investment banking. This will be fantastic for anyone who wants a job in business and specifically finance as he will be providing tips for applying that you won’t find on any careers website as well as enabling students to experience the stock market. Finally, over the course of three days next week, all A-level MFL students will take part in their oral mock exams. I would like to wish them all the best of luck.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Never let me go is a suspenseful and absorbing science fiction novel and coming of age story which follows three friends through their unusual childhood. As secrets surrounding their time at the boarding school Hailsham and lives ahead begin to unfold the novel explores the idea of what it is to have a soul and the innate need to hold onto things lost. It’s a sorrowful and complex novel which criticises the extents of exploitation and the moral implications while debating with the blurred line between right and wrong. It’s a very short yet deeply thought provoking novel which I would highly recommend to anyone looking to read something full of love, identity and friendship but with a disturbing yet crucial message which will leave you changed.
