Many real estate companies remain behind the curve when it comes to cybersecurity. With no federal law requiring them to implement information security programs, these businesses are increasingly becoming targets for sophisticated cyberattacks. One of the most alarming threats are BEC scams: Top Five Cybersecurity Threats to Real Estate Businesses

Business Email Comprimise ( BEC )

BEC scams trick real estate professionals into wiring money to fraudulent accounts. Criminals often impersonate trusted contacts like CEOs, escrow agents, or attorneys using spoofed email addresses. The FBI has reported over $3 billion in losses from BEC, and real estate remains a prime target due to frequent high-value wire transfers.

Example: Ubiquiti, a publicly traded company, lost $46.7 million to a Business Email Comprimise scam involving fake wire instructions.

Security Tip: Passphrases Beat Passwords

Strong authentication starts with strong credentials. Instead of short, complicated passwords, try using a passphrase — a longer string of memorable words. Passphrases are easier to remember and much harder for attackers to crack.

AVOID

DON’T USE

• Personal information (names, dates, hobbies) • Common phrases or quotes • Reused passwords across multiple accounts

When in doubt, make it long, unique, and private. Learn more from Okta below:
