Business Email Comprimise ( BEC )
BEC scams trick real estate professionals into wiring money to fraudulent accounts. Criminals often impersonate trusted contacts like CEOs, escrow agents, or attorneys using spoofed email addresses. The FBI has reported over $3 billion in losses from BEC, and real estate remains a prime target due to frequent high-value wire transfers.
Example: Ubiquiti, a publicly traded company, lost $46.7 million to a Business Email Comprimise scam involving fake wire instructions.
