In pre-kindergarten, students at The Orchard School are encouraged to deepen their knowledge, curiosity, and wonder of the world around them. Building on our developmental approach to curriculum, our pre- kindergarten classrooms utilize a nature- and student-led learning environment to further support more explicit instruction in the academic and social-emotional domains. Small group work and attention to a child’s individual learning approach are trademarks of our class time exploring literacy, math, science, and social studies together as a community. In pre-kindergarten and beyond, we utilize an emergent curriculum that is flexible and responsive to the needs of our students. The topics for study often develop from conversations, family events, and interests of both the children and their teachers. We utilize these interests to build upon developmental benchmarks in social skills, language, literacy, math, science, and social studies.
