First Grade Curriculum Guide
FIRST GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Science
First graders are uniquely poised at Orchard to experience the world as scientists. The curriculum is specifically designed to integrate their units to leverage their natural curiosity and growing ability to do more complex skill-based tasks. Using tools, conducting investigations and research are an important part of every science unit introduced, each becoming more complex as the year goes to also encourage a sense of independence.
First graders grow as scientists by:
• Planning and carrying out investigations. • Designing fair tests, which provide data to support explanations or design solutions. • Making observations (firsthand and from media) to collect data that can be used to make comparisons. • Leading the annual Maple Tree Tapping on campus.
Spanish
¡Hola!
First graders expand and continue to explore introductory activities related to the Spanish culture and language. Through developmentally appropriate investigations, first grade students practice vocabulary and Spanish concepts related to:
• Basic greetings and introductions • Colors & numbers • Body parts & feelings • Calendar practice with days and months • Seasons and weather • Family
