Third Grade Curriculum Guide
THIRD GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Spanish
¡Hola!
In third grade, students in Spanish acquire language by engaging their imaginations with content that is meaningful to them, including collaborating across third grade literacy, social studies, and outdoor education curricula. Indiana World Language standards are used to guide thematic units around our shared human experience. Students continue to receive comprehensible input in Spanish using gestures, illustrations, songs, stories, everyday objects, and artwork. Circling, or asking a series of prescribed questions in Spanish about a statement in Spanish, is used to teach language holistically, without having to teach overt grammar rules. Vocabulary is embedded in discussion questions and students respond with simple oral or written sentences. Students begin to develop spelling, grammar, and organization skills through daily writing practice in a Spanish notebook. Opportunities to speak Spanish with a partner or group characterizes each lesson.
