Middle School Curriculum Guide

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Wellness - Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) classes focus on learning and practicing movement concepts and physical skills. We emphasize the following themes: cooperative games, team building, fitness, and skill development. We strive for an environment and program that is inclusive, meaningful, and joyful for all students. Our curriculum and instructions strive to foster enthusiasm for movement and educate students to be confident and competent in physical activities, ultimately leading to healthy, active lifestyles.

Wellness - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) class focuses themes of identity. Students explore their own identities, our society, and the world around them. Students will concentrate on building community, understanding differences, and the power of diverse ideas. The goal is to empower students to respect and love themselves, celebrate each other, and find tangible ways to make our world a better place.

Wellness - Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education (OE) classes are based on nature as a teacher to build a foundation of self-reliance, trust, collaboration, and creative thinking. Student work to be effective and ethical leaders in the outdoors and in the community. Throughout this program, leadership skills such as communicating, planning, risk-management, decision-making, team-development, and problem solving are taught through hands-on experiences. Students experience wayfinding, wilderness survival, climbing, and Orchard’s challenge course during this exploration. Our goal is to empower all students with the knowledge and skills to be safe, confident, and respectful of the outdoors.

Wellness - Social Emotional Learning

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) classes build essential skills to support students’ personal and academic growth. SEL is integral to educating the whole child by enhancing students’ self- awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision- making. In middle school, students build upon the foundational skills learned in elementary school and develop a deeper understanding of social-emotional competencies. SEL is also integrated into various subjects and activities, such as classroom lessons, group discussions, role-playing, mindfulness exercises, and community service projects. SEL supports students’ emotional well-being, academic success, and lifelong learning.
