Fifth Grade Curriculum Guide

FIFTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

English

The focus of fifth-grade English at The Orchard School is laying a foundation that helps all students become avid readers and writers. Through literary genre studies, class discussions, independent reading, book clubs, classwide reading of the same novel, and formal and informal writing pieces, students will begin to develop and deepen their reading and writing identities. Because identities influence learning and understanding of the world, it is essential that students are provided with opportunities to cultivate positive, growth- oriented identities. As students move through fifth grade, they work to develop and deepen identities by reading a variety of texts as well as their writing identities through regular writing practice. The English curriculum is based on Common Core Standards.

Fifth-graders will grow as readers and writers by:

• Clearly articulating thoughts and ideas through writing. • Supporting thoughts, ideas, and arguments using evidence.

Topics of study

• Agency and independence with reading • All class and independent novel studies

• Literary genres • Opinion writing • Book clubs
